Let me see if I have my facts straight:
He lost at least one coin? yes
Nobody realized it was lost? yes
Therefore nobody tried to retrieve it?yes
Nobody realized that lives were saved? yes
It was the coin itself that physically prevented an accident which would have taken several lives?yes

Did the coin become lodged somewhere?no
Was there a form of transportation involved?no
If so, bus? train? plane? car? boat?
Was there a building involved?no
Did the coin end up inside or outside?Could be considered as both
If the coin had been moved subsequent to this saving of lives, would lives again be endangered?not for a while
Is the size of the coin relevant?no
He didn't exactly drop the coin, but did he throw or toss it? no
If so, did he gather some other tossed or thrown coins and miss the life-saving coin?no
Since nobody tried to retrieve the coin, can I assume that the saving of lives did not involve somebody bending over to pick up the coin and thus avoid becoming a target?yes

Did it get lost in a doorway or on a windowsill?

Were the endagered lives inside or outside?

was the potential accident a fire? flood? Lightning? Power Outage? Hurricane? Falling tree in said hurricane? Stampede? perhaps involving Eliot's chickens?

Did dropping the coin/coins reduce the weight of the group in a relevant way?

Did he save his own life as well by dropping the coin?

Did the coin land on its side?

Was gambling involved?

If the man hadn't dropped the change, would an accident have occured?
Was he boarding a bus, and by dropping the coins, bent over to see an explosive under the driver's seat?
Was he about to purchase a disease-ridden sandwich, and didn't have enough money?
Did everyone who was saved bend over to get the coins as gunfire broke out?

In his own home?
In someone else's home?
On a public sidewalk? Street?
Inside a building? Public? Private? Municipal?
Outdoors? On grass/dirt?
On a hard surface? Metal? Marble? Stone? Wood?

Good call Woubit.

Fresh water or salt?
Was this a larger body of water?
Like a lake? River? Ocean?
Or a smaller body of water?
Like a puddle? Pond? Stream?
Was it a reservoir? A lagoon?

I don't know whether this has been established, but are we talking about drinking water here? for humans? for animals? or water used to irrigate crops?

At any rate, is the idea that by dropping the coin in the fountain, Our Hero had ensured that the water would contain enough zinc to remedy some deficiency of that metal in some living organism?

Is it relevant how or why the coin fell in the water?
Did it fall into an open (or enclosed?) water tank?

Did the coin contain gold? silver? tin? iron? aluminium?, [LTPF list of metallic elements]
Any relevant non-metallic elements?

Did they coin corrode and release a metal toxic to contaminating microbes in the water?

The silver coin, when put into the water, released siver ions, which were lethal to bacteria that had contaminated the water
