The first one broke? Is unusable? Died? Got lost? Went away? Doesn't meet specifications? Won't sing? Won't fly? Won't shine? Ate the pear in the tree and choked on it? |

Is this relevant? There's a Hole in My Bucket Liza: Henry! Fetch me some water! Henry: There's a hole in my bucket dear Liza, dear Liza There's a hole in my bucket dear Liza, a hole. Liza: Well, fix it dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry, Well, fix it dear Henry, dear Henry, fix it. Henry: With what shall I fix it ... Liza: With a straw dear Henry ... Henry: The straw is too long ... Liza: Well, cut it dear Henry ... Henry: With what shall I cut it ... Liza: With an axe dear Henry ... Henry: The axe is too dull dear Liza ... Liza: Well, sharpen it dear Henry ... Henry: With what shall I sharpen it ... Liza: With a stone dear Henry ... Henry: The stone is too dry dear Liza ... Liza: Well, wet it dear Henry ... Henry: With what shall I wet it ... Liza: With water dear Henry ... Henry: In what shall I fetch it ... Liza: In a bucket dear Henry ... Henry: There's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza ... |

OK, it's fairly obvious that Simon has got it, so I will declare a ***** SPOILER ***** This does indeed come from 'There's a Hole in my Bucket', the words for which have been kindly reproduced above by Simon. As can be seen, the song uses circular paradoxical logic - Henry's bucket has a hole, but to repair it the bucket is needed - but there is of course a hole in that bucket. Reading this song prompted my thought, which is the statement - "So get another [bucket]!" The title is indeed relevant - the names Liza and Henry are also the names of the principal cast in 'Pygmalion', where 'Enry 'Iggins has the self-imposed task of turning Liza from a Cockney flower-girl to a duchess with Queen's English. |
