A postman intends to deliver mail to a house on his route. However, when he gets to the house, he decides not to put the mail into the mailbox, but instead sets the mail on the doorstep. He is not physically restricted from putting the mail into the box, nor would there be any danger from doing so. Why does he do this?

Does he hear something happening inside the door that he doesn't want to see or interrupt?

Is the mailbox free-standing? (on a pole at the end of the driveway, frex?) Attached to the porch railing? attached to the house itself? attached to the door? a mailslot, rather than a box?

Is the mailbox big enough to hold all the mail he has for this house? Is the mailbox already full?

Does he open the mailbox before deciding to leave the mail on the doorstep?

Is there something wrong with the mailbox? Does he have any fears of something on it? About it? In it? Around it? Is there a physical aspect about the mailbox that causes him to put the mail on the stoop?

Did he choose to do this of his own free will? Was he influenced by someone else?

Was there someone inside the house at the time? If so, did he know that they would be there?

Was there something about the mail that influenced his decision? The weather?

Snow?
Ice?

Was the mailbox standing in a deep snowdrift?, due to natural drifting? or due to the road being plowed?

Is the mailman acquainted with the person(s) who live in the house? Did he know that because of the weather they would not want to have to walk to the mailbox? Would it have been dangerous? or difficult? for the resident(s) to walk to the mailbox? Is the resident(s) elderly? frail? handicapped?

It would appear that this was a quick one.

******SPOILER*********

He was delivering to his grandmother's house. When he noticed the ice covering her sidewalk, he worried that she would be in danger if she walked all the way out to the mailbox in order to get the mail, because of her frailty, so, although this is genarally not permitted, he put the mail on her doorstep. He knew she would appreciate the act.

I'm sorry. I didn't intend to kill it that fast.... It was a good one.
