Tom calls Eliza, even though he knows she is not at home, and does not expect her to call him back. He keeps the receiver to his ear just long enough to hear it ringing in the other end, then puts it down. Why? |

Are Tom and Eliza related? Does Tom call merely to check that the phone is still connected? And consequently, that no harm has come to Eliza? If Eliza were to answer, would Tom hang up immediately? be unconcerned? be very concerned? call on emergency services? Does Eliza know of Tom's actions? Does Eliza even know that Tom exists? Would it be illegal for Tom to actually talk to Eliza? Is he a stalker? who's had a restraining order placed upon him? and the only 'legal' way to 'contact' her is to ring her when she's not at home (to make sure that she's OK), and then hang up? |

Are Tom and Eliza related? No Does Tom call merely to check that the phone is still connected? And consequently, that no harm has come to Eliza? Both no If Eliza were to answer, would Tom hang up immediately? be unconcerned? be very concerned? call on emergency services? None of these Does Eliza know of Tom's actions? His calling her, you mean? Noish. Does Eliza even know that Tom exists? Yes Would it be illegal for Tom to actually talk to Eliza? Is he a stalker? who's had a restraining order placed upon him? and the only 'legal' way to 'contact' her is to ring her when she's not at home (to make sure that she's OK), and then hang up? Is it even physically possible for Eliza to answer the phone? Would it be possible for Tom and Eliza to meet face-to-face? Would Tom want to see Eliza? Would Eliza want to see Tom? Do they live in the same country? Speak the same language? Live in the same time zone? How often does Tom call Eliza - every day? every week? once a fortnight? once a month? quarterly? every six months? annually? biannually? on Tom's birthday? on Eliza's birthday? at Christmas? Easter? at another significant event? (if so, is this event publicly known e.g. Thanksgiving, or St. George's Day? or a private one e.g. an anniversary?) |

Is it even physically possible for Eliza to answer the phone? If she were at home, and Tom had let the phone ring more than a couple of seconds before hanging up, yes Would it be possible for Tom and Eliza to meet face-to-face? Would Tom want to see Eliza? Would Eliza want to see Tom? All yes Do they live in the same country? Speak the same language? Live in the same time zone? All yes How often does Tom call Eliza - every day? every week? once a fortnight? once a month? quarterly? every six months? annually? biannually? on Tom's birthday? on Eliza's birthday? at Christmas? Easter? at another significant event? (if so, is this event publicly known e.g. Thanksgiving, or St. George's Day? or a private one e.g. an anniversary?) Tom will probably have called Eliza on previous occasions, and spoken with her. However, the call-and-hang-up-immediately act is a singleton event which he has not done before, and will probably not do again. There is no special event. Tom will have called Eliza, say, once or twice a week. are both Tom and Eliza human ? Yes |

Is the purpose of the call, then, for Eliza's phone to store the number from which Tom was calling? Was it the number from which he usuallly calls her? |

Was it the act of making a phone call that was important? That is, could Tom just as well called another number that he knew wouldn't answer as Eliza? Yope to the purpose of the call being to have Eliza's phone show Tom's number. Was he calling to let her know that he was OK? (His number and the time would show on her caller ID, and she'd know that he had gotten home safely from somewhere?) |

Is jealousy involved? Another man? Does he know that someone else has called her? And he doesn't want her to know that? Does Tom calling her mean that she cannot know the phone numbers of those who might have rung before him? (We can only find out who called last - unless of course they leave an actual message). |

Was it the act of making a phone call that was important? That is, could Tom just as well called another number that he knew wouldn't answer as Eliza? In this sense, no. Yope to the purpose of the call being to have Eliza's phone show Tom's number. Was he calling to let her know that he was OK? No(His number and the time would show on her caller ID, and she'd know that he had gotten home safely from somewhere? This is not the situation) Is jealousy involved? Another man? Both yes Does he know that someone else has called her? Yes And he doesn't want her to know that? Correct Does Tom calling her mean that she cannot know the phone numbers of those who might have rung before him? Correct(We can only find out who called last - unless of course they leave an actual message). *************** SPOILER ******************** Tom has a romantic interest in Eliza, and knows that Bob also does. Tom has just spoken to Bob and been informed that Bob has just phoned Eliza to ask her out, but that no-one picked up the phone. Tom will drop by Eliza later to ask her out, but knows that Eliza's phone is of a type that has a blinking light telling her someone has called, when she gets home, as well as give away the number of the latest caller. So he phones her to cancel the pone's memory of Bob's call, so Eliza won't call him back and become occupied for the evening. |
