after they were startled, would they have continued where they were going? yes turned around and gone back? no talked to the people in the other vehicle? no

To refocus a little bit, I will post a RECAP:

They stopped and started.

What you have figured out so far is that "they" are a husband and wife. They were traveling in two different vehicles going different directions. They stopped for a pedestrian and startled each other.

Where were they when they stopped for the pedestrian and why were they startled?

(We're basically down to the last couple of finishing details.)

Did they see each other before they stopped? They were turning around a corner at high speeds and would have hit each other if they had not stopped for the pedestrian? Did the pedestrian know them? Did either/both of them know the pedestrian? Were they in the city? In the suburbs? In a rural area? On a bridge? In a field? In a mountanous area? On the road? Were the roads icy/wet? Season/Time relevant?

Right, that was why I thought they'd be startled if they saw each other going different directions when they're supposed to be going to the same place...

They are stopping for the same pedestrian at the same crosswalk, right? Is it an intersection? Is there more to it then them being surprised to see each other when they were going different places?

**************SPOILER***************************

They stopped and started.

This is a true story that happened to my parents (I was actually in the car too, but that wasn't relevant to the puzzle). My mom and I were driving downtown to run some kind of errand during the day while my dad was at work. We stopped for a pedestrian crossing at a crosswalk, and when we looked at the car who had stopped for the pedestrian on the other side of the road, it happened to be my dad! What are the chances, in a city, of that happening?
