I went into a large ten-story hotel and took the elevator from the ground floor to the top floor. Nobody else got into or left the elevator until I got to the top floor yet the elevator stopped at each floor. I did not press any buttons or request the elevator to stop. What was happening? | ||

NO Everyone in the building was heading for the top floor for some reason, so the lift was stopping at every floor, but nobody got in because it was already full? Yes and no to normal behaviour--is it normal in particular circumstances? Was it functioning in some kind of diagnostic mode? Was it functioning in a particular mode intended for people with disabilities or some such? | ||

had anyone other than you pressed buttons to stop the lift? you said no one entered - but was there someone waiting to go up at any of the floors? did anyone decide not to enter the lift when the doors opened? could this have happened without you in the lift? without anyone in the lift? was there anything unusual about your appearance that might make someone change their mind about entering the lift? Could this be the scenario: there are people at each floor pressing buttons to go up, but there is another lift which reaches each floor just before you, so when your lift doors open the people are already entering the other lift, so there is no one left to get into yours? | ||

The lift stopped at every floor... does this mean that it stopped 10 times? Or perhaps the other 10 storeys of the building don't have floors? Does the lift stop at every floor so that if there are any midgets or particularly tall people who have difficulty reaching certain buttons they will not be disappointed? | ||

You didn't request the elevator to stop, but did you expect the elevator to stop at every floor? You were the only person in the lift - was there anything else in the lift? Was the elevator a "pedestrian" elevator? Was it a freight elevator? - Were you required to pass certain objects out as you went up. | ||

Did the elevator come from the department "Of making simple things complicated" and have things like proximity sensors to detect whether someone is waiting for the lift (and it keeps picking up say a pot plant as someone waiting for the lift) or push-less buttons (detect whether your hand 'would' be pushing the button, had there been a button there) Was the elevator steel or glass (or other relevant material?) | ||

Was it working in a mode designed for someone whose hands were full or was wearing mittens or some such (i. e. they couldn't push the buttons)? For maintenance or custodial personnel? Or maybe there were a lot of people staying at the hotel who had brought their pet armadillos, and they liked the armadillos to be able to get to the proper floor alone after going for a constitutional? Was there any relevant event taking place at the hotel? | ||

Tim, I was specifically thinking of maybe Israel and the Sabbath... *******SPOILER******** This was in Tel Aviv on the Sabbath. Orthodox Jews are forbidden to press buttons on this day, so the elevator is programmed to stop at every floor to let people enter and leave. |
