Title relevant? Is this statement said by a particular person? Or just a general statement? Tone of resignation? Frustration? It always is, except sometimes the birds are present/absent? It always is, but this is not true in the case of the birds? Are these birds alive? Do they have a physical existence? Are they just birds in general? Birds kept as pets? Kind of birds relevant? |

Hmm...been thinking and need to clarify the "classic literature" thing... The book in question is widely regarded as "classic literature," but depending on what you consider the definition of "classic" this may mislead. Many people don't consider a book classic until it is 50 years old (which this book is not) or unless the author is dead (which he is not). But it is a highly regarded literary work and it is not uncommon to be on a school's reading list if not part of the regular curriculum. Hope that helps. |

Is the statement found in the book but not in the text of the novel (it is a novel, isn't it?)? Hmm...hard to say...because of the author's style, you could argue that it is part of the text of the novel or that it's not. I say it is. And yes it is a novel. Was the statement given by the author? yes, by the author a critic? a reviewer? a reader? a person in real life? Is Sam the author? no a critic? no a reviewer? no a reader? yope...he will read the book, but that is not his primary relation to the author a person in real life? yes |

And he is apologising for not being able to write very articulately about the bombing? yes After all, there's not much you can meaningfully say after a horrible bombing raid in WW2. Is that close?close enough for a ************Spoiler******************* Kurt Vonnegut's apology to his publisher Seymour “Sam” Lawrence, in the introduction to Slaughterhouse Five, upon finally writing his much anticipated Dresden book: “And I say to Sam now: ‘Sam—here’s the book.’ It’s so short and jumbled and jangled, Sam, because there is nothing intelligent to say about a massacre. Everybody is supposed to be dead, to never say anything or want anything ever again. Everything is supposed to be very quiet after a massacre, and it always is, except for the birds. And what do the birds say? All there is to say about a massacre, things like ‘Poo-tee-weet?” Thanks to everyone who participated--please join in my other 2 puzzles and my new one to be poster tomorrow! |
