BeccaAnn: certainly! It's much older than American Idol, which I think is like our Pop Idol in the UK. In the Eurovision, each country of Europe chooses a song (they are usually tacky and rather awful pop tunes) and there is one big night each year when the songs are played back-to-back, followed by a live judging by juries from all the countries. The only restriction is that you can't vote for your own country. The winning country gets to host the following year's event. For some reason, Israel is in the contest though it isn't in Europe. This year the winners were masked monster rockers from Finland. Of course I am still baffled by the puzzle. |

Was the vase of flowers in the room with one of the viewers? (earlier post suggest not...) Was the vase part of a tv company logo? Was the thing about which the two had differing opinions - Who had won the contest? Who would win the contest? The identity of one artist/group? The identity of one of the presenters? Nationality of one act? The location of the contest? Country? City? One of the locations shown during the contest? (those of us who know the Eurovision Song Contest will know that each song is preceded by some publicity shots of locations round the host city) |

were different tv stations airing the contest? if so, did the flowers block the scoreboard on one station, but a different camera angle on another station prevented this? Or were both people watching the exact same footage? |

let's say Rick was the one who didn't see flowers and got the right result, and Mike saw flowers and got the wrong result Were the flowers obscuring part of the scoreboard from Mike? Were the flowers obscuring some (? or all?) of the performers from Mike? Were the flowers obscuring some (? or all?) of the judges from Mike? Were they actually obscuring Mike's vision from some of the performance? Or merely a distraction from some part of the performance? |

Would seeing the flowers lead to the wrong result because it would mean they'd be watching the channel on which the flowers are visible? If someone had been watching the same channel but the flowers had been replaced by a similar sized object, would someone seeing the new object still get the wrong result? If the channel on which the flowers are shown had omitted flowers altogether, would someone watching this channel still get the wrong result? |

By inteerupted transmission, I mean did the transmission actually stop at some point during the proceedings? If the vase had been present, but without flowers or water, would the interruption still have been likely? Were the flowers shown as an intermission during the break in normal transmission? Just before the break in transmission, did the two people see the same programme (although on different channels), i.e. it would be clear to both men and anyone else watching these two channels, the scores attained by each act? Did the break in transmission come before all the votes had been collected? Before any of the votes had been collected? After all the votes had been collected? Before all the acts had been heard? Hmmm... gonna stick in some made up details to get the story clear. Interrupt me if I go wrong Mike is in Estonia, cheering on his national side in the Eurovision Song Contest. Rick is in Latvia doing the same for his entry. At 10pm, when some (but not all) votes are in, the Latvian transmission is interrupted, and they show a vase of flowers instead, presumably under the impression people wouldn't mind (or notice much difference ). At this point in time, Estonia are in the lead, and they go on to win. Rick is unaware at the time that Estonia have won. For some reason, he thinks Lavia may win? Ok so far? |

I don't even know if they compete. I deliberately picked countries at random in a similar way to how many pick names. however, you've got me thinking... Did the interrupted transmission becomes so because the station airing the event thought it was all but over and switched to regularly scheduled programming? It makes me think of an issue with an American Football game in the 60's. The NBC network airing the game assuming it was over because there was only about a minute left to play. They switched over to the made-for-TV movie "Heidi", and the team that was down (the Oakland Raiders I think) made an unbelieveable comeback. Of course, all anyone saw on network television was some silly girl in the mountains. When you mentioned the flowers and the whole situation in general, that makes me think of the whole NFL thing. |

Was the man watching the interrupted transmission supporting the country he was born in? Was he in the country he was born in? Was the country with the interrupted transmission one which normally takes part in Eurovision? Or has in the past? (my list is from this year's competition, so it could be a country which no longer participates. Or no longer exists...) |

?? My post of September 01, 2006 - 12:57 pm mentions two people watching their respective national sides in the contest, which got a yes, but you say the country with the interrupted transmission doesn't normally take part? Is this the first time the country with the interrupted transmission took part in the competitition? Was transmission interrupted by some accident? Or on purpose by the country's broadcasting authority or government? |

So there are two people, Mike and Rick, both watching the Eurovision contest. They are from two different countries, with a strong rivalry (in something other then Eurovision.) Each is a supporter of their own country's entrant. The transmission one (let's say Rick) received was interrupted, and for a while, all he saw was the image of a vase with flowers in it. However, Rick wasn't in any country that participates in the contest. Was he, therefore watching via satellite feed in a third country? The US? Canada? |

Hi all, im new so pls forgive me for any errors were the flowers the national symbol for one of the countries ie on a flag etc? or, did the interrupted viewer see his country perform immediately prior to the interruption, hence the next thing seen on his/her screen were the flowers and he/she assumed the flowers were being presented to his/her countries performer?also, does the interrupted viewer understand the language the program is being broadcast in? |

Ok, was the country with the interrupted transmission one which stopped the transmission because the country which was winning was not one they'd want to win? Did the interruption contain any other information, such as an announcement that another country had gone on to win? |

During the voting it became obvious Israel was going to win,at which point they cut back to the flowers until the contest finished. Official Lebanese and Syrian news broadcasts stated that the winners were Belgium(I believe) who actually finished 2nd. |

Very Good! I confess to being something of a fan of the Eurovision Song contest, though I stress purely for the humour, politics and bizarre nature of the contest rather than the quality of the music (Lordi...) |
