There is a guy chasing a fat guy. The fat guy hides behind a skinny tree, so you should be able to see him. The chasing man fires and misses. Why? |

Could the guy(Can I name him Ivan?) see the fat guy(Can I name him Garet?)? Was the tree skinnier than the fat guy? Were there low branches? Does the chasing man fire a gun? Use real fire(ex. a flamethrower)? Fire a slingshot? DOes the chasing man miss the tree? The fat man? Something else? Both? Does he do it on purpose? |

Do we need to know why the gunman is chasing the fat guy? Is there something which obscures the fat guy from view, other than the tree? Is it a subtantial object? or insubstantial? (eg shadow?) Does the gunman know the fat guy is hiding behind the tree? Does he think he is somewhere else? Does he aim at the spot he thinks the fat guy is? Or does he just fire a wild shot? Visual illusion? Is part of the tree underwater, and so refraction of light comes into play? |

These are two living humans, correct? And the scenario is as described, with Ivan chasing Garet(for presumably irrelevant reasons?) And Ivan the gunman is attempting to shoot Garet the fat guy with a gun? And the Garet is attempting to avoid being shot? Is Garet hiding directly behind the tree, i.e. is he in a position where he is touching the tree, or could if he chose to do so? Or is he hiding, say, 2 miles behind...? |

Jack, see Masha's earlier post, he's touching the tree. Is the Garet at ground level? Is Ivan? Is Garet visually obscured from the gunman, other than by the tree trunk itself? Would he be visible to another person standing somewhere closeby? Can Ivan actually see some parts of Garet? |

Mike-- No, the fat guy is the one near enough to touch the tree, nothing's said about the gunman.. Does Garet know that the gunman cannnot see him? Is he surprised that Ivan misses? or has he deliberately done something to ensure that he cannot be seen, despite the fact that the tree is skinny? |

Is Ivan disturbed when shooting? Is the gun of the arm moved when shooting? (other than normal firing action, recoil, etc). At the instant the bullet leaves the gun, if normal circumstances were to prevail, would the bullet hit Garet? Would it hit the tree? |

I meant did something (? or someone?) distract Ivan as he's about to shoot? Or something or someone strike/push/trip Ivan? (But your earlier reply points in a different direction...) So although Garet is standing behind a tree skinnier than himself, Ivan cannot see Garet, true? any of Garet? And someone standing close to where Ivan is standing, similarly wouldn't be able to see Garet, true? Someone standing on the same side of the tree as Garet wouldn't be able to see him? Is he wearing something relevant to this? Some camouflage? |

Hey Masha, you missed my post on July 27, 10.54 am.. Anything physically different about Garet apart from him being fat? There is no other object around Garet except the tree..correct? To clarify:
quote:At the instant the bullet leaves the gun, if normal circumstances were to prevail, would the bullet hit Garet? yes
So..something happened in the short time it took for the bullet to reach Garet? Did Garet move? Did something else move? Did the bullet miss Garet by much? |

Is Garet invisible, in the HG Wells sense? If Garet moved away and someone else stood where he was standing, would that person then be similarly difficult to see? If Garet moved away from the tree, would he become more visible? Is there only one tree in this scenario? Or is he stood behind a skinny tree which is in the middle of a HUGE forest? |
