Carina = adult? human? female?
Did she whistle a musical tune? Did she whistle some signal? Is it relevant what she whistled? or is the act of whistling in itself relevant?

Whe=we? or was 'whe' the name of an athlete in a competitive Race Walking event that Carina knew and whom she was supporting on the sidelines on this very hot day of which she gave him support by whistling to him the song 'It's a cool day after all' in order to help him feel more comfortable while he was completing the race? ;)

In the phrase "Carnia whistled while 'she' walked." 'she'=Carnia?
Did Carnia whistle in order to make more of a 'physical' result happen or more for a 'psychological' result to occur? or both equally?

What is important about the hot climate:
vegetation? fauna? buildings adaptet to hot climate? peoples habits? anything else adaptet to hot climate?
Anything to do with a mirage?
Are shadows relevant? the sun? clouds? rain?

You said earlier that she was ordered to whistle so that the owner could tell she wasn't eating or drinking, correct?
Does the hot climate mean the owner is likely to be asleep? Or inside a cool building? And therefore rather than stand out in the heat overseeing slaves, they ar ordered to whistle so that he knows they aren't slacking? And/or absconding?

You said earlier that she was ordered to whistle so that the owner could tell she wasn't eating or drinking, correct?yes
Does the hot climate mean the owner is likely to be asleep?no Or inside a cool building?yesishAnd therefore rather than stand out in the heat overseeing slaves, they ar ordered to whistle so that he knows they aren't slacking?no And/or absconding?no

Is there a relevant building in this puzzle? if yes is it a building of the slaveholder? his residence?
Besides Carina and the slaveholder are there any other people envolved?
Is the actual position of Carina relevant? the position of the slaveholder?
Was Carina at the moment working? on the field?
Is her exact occupation relevant?
Is the fact that Carina was walking relevant?
Is clothing relevant?
Admit that the climate was not hot, Carina would have been ordered to whistle? would have whistled? the slaveholder would have changed anything else?

Was the order to whistle some kind of punishment?
At the time Carina is working, is walking a necessary part of the work? (e.g. picking cotton or fruit?) Is whistling a necessary part of the work? i{(e.g. scaring off birds)}
At the time of working, can the slave owner, from the position he is in, see Carina? All of her? Can he hear Carina? Clearly?

Hello, this is my first post, sorry if I do anything wrong! I've lurked for AGES, thanks for all your puzzles.

My grandma used to make me whistle when I was shelling peas/sorting raisins, so she knew I wasn't eating them! Anything like this?

Hi Felicia Nimue

So we have here a slave carrying a meal from a kitchen building to her master who is in another building? and normally he would be able to see her so that he would know if she was eating/drinking anything? but because it was hot he was not able to see her for some reason? and so he told her to whistle to prove she was not eating/drinking? and now we have to find out exactly why he could not see her? and how that links in with it being hot?

the new situation - is it that he is now inside a building when, with cooler weather, he would be outside? is it that he has drawn the blinds/curtains/shuitters to keep the sun out so he can no longer see her?
is it tha he is in a different part of the building so he could no longer see her? would he normally sit by the window but it is too hot to do so now?

So, if the weather wasn't hot, the owner would be able to see the slave clearly?

inside the house? outside?
inside another house/shed/sort of building?

Does she go directly to the slave owner, so meet him in person? Does she just put the meal somewhere? Does she have to whistle on her way back?

Does the hot climate change...
the owners position?
his clothing?
something about the lunch Carina carries?

Was the kitchen (the residence building?) provided with a cooling device that you would not find nowadays?

If we transfer the story to nowadays: Carina is a housemaid her employer is mean and doesn't want her to eat anything of his food.
The layout of the buildings could still be the same? the buildings are likely to have an air conditioner?
Carina does still have to walk? to whistle?

********** SPOILER **************
Because of the hot climate, cookhouses in the 19th century South in the USA were at a distance from the main house & often connected by an emnclosed tunnel. Slaves who brought the food were supposedly required to whistle to show they weren't eating the food. Thanks for sticking with it, everyone, & for solving it, Tobasi, & please direct those clever lateral minds to my new puzzle at the bottom of the page
