Carina = adult? human? female? Did she whistle a musical tune? Did she whistle some signal? Is it relevant what she whistled? or is the act of whistling in itself relevant? |

Whe=we? or was 'whe' the name of an athlete in a competitive Race Walking event that Carina knew and whom she was supporting on the sidelines on this very hot day of which she gave him support by whistling to him the song 'It's a cool day after all' in order to help him feel more comfortable while he was completing the race? ;) |

Is Carina selling food/drink? Or giving food/drink to others? Other slaves? Is she pushing a cart of food/drink? Or carrying a basket? Or one of those things which goes on the head allowing the wearer to carry surprising amounts of goods? |

Is the distance of Carina from the building more than 1 m? 2? 5? 10? 20? ... 1000 m? Is Carina going towards the building? going away from it? relevant? Is Carina gathering food? Milking an animal?
quote:setting the table no or similar? yesish, but what counts as sinilar?
you're right, so: Was there a table involved? objects like plates? glasses? cutlery? was she preparing something? (If any yes I would personally consider that she was doing something similar ...) |

Was she carrying a tray with the slaveholder's breakfast/lunch/dinner from a kitchen house to his house? Did she have to whistle so the slaveholder would hear her coming early? Was she walking next to the wall under the slaveholders bedroom window so the slaveholder had enough time to get dressed until she would arrive? |

Hello, this is my first post, sorry if I do anything wrong! I've lurked for AGES, thanks for all your puzzles. My grandma used to make me whistle when I was shelling peas/sorting raisins, so she knew I wasn't eating them! Anything like this? |

Hi Felicia Nimue So we have here a slave carrying a meal from a kitchen building to her master who is in another building? and normally he would be able to see her so that he would know if she was eating/drinking anything? but because it was hot he was not able to see her for some reason? and so he told her to whistle to prove she was not eating/drinking? and now we have to find out exactly why he could not see her? and how that links in with it being hot? the new situation - is it that he is now inside a building when, with cooler weather, he would be outside? is it that he has drawn the blinds/curtains/shuitters to keep the sun out so he can no longer see her? is it tha he is in a different part of the building so he could no longer see her? would he normally sit by the window but it is too hot to do so now? |

(Sorry, we were on track a while back with this, and veered off.) So, if the weather wasn't hot, the owner would be able to see the slave clearly? Is it daytime? Or nighttime? |

Is the place Carina goes to... inside the house? outside? inside another house/shed/sort of building? Does she go directly to the slave owner, so meet him in person? Does she just put the meal somewhere? Does she have to whistle on her way back? Does the hot climate change... the owners position? his clothing? something about the lunch Carina carries? |

Was the kitchen (the residence building?) provided with a cooling device that you would not find nowadays? If we transfer the story to nowadays: Carina is a housemaid her employer is mean and doesn't want her to eat anything of his food. The layout of the buildings could still be the same? the buildings are likely to have an air conditioner? Carina does still have to walk? to whistle? |

Is the distance between these buildings relevant? more than 1? 2? 5? 10? 20? 50? 100? 200? 500? meter? Is the architectural style of the kitchen building relevant? of the other building? |

Slaves who brought the food were supposedly required to whistle to show they weren't eating the food. Thanks for sticking with it, everyone, & for solving it, Tobasi, & please direct those clever lateral minds to my new puzzle at the bottom of the page |
