Is MP the MP from MP3? Or MPEG? (which I believe stands for Motion Picture) Incidentally, could it happen today, as opposed to the date you set the puzzle? Could it happen tomorrow? could it happen at a time in the future? |

No could it happen at a time in the future? Yes To clarify, "Today" perhaps should be replaced with "this year". Today being the present time we are living in. I apologise for my poor use of language!!!! 1) It did happen in the past 2) It cant happen this year 3) It could happen in the future |

Is there something about the number 2006 which means it can't happen this year? Does M stand for a word? Does P? Is the title the start of a joke, kind of "The only useful MP... is a dead MP"? (whatever MP stands for, which obviously is yet to be determined) |

So it happened once on the past, correct? And it could happen once (? or more than once?) in the future, true? Was there a specific time in the past when it happened? When it happened, was it happening for:- seconds? minutes? hours? days? weeks? months? years? centuries? i know you could answer all of these truthfully with a yes, given that any period of time could be represented as a large or small number of these units, however I hope you'll be more helpful than that... Was it something which could be measured in a timespan at all? |

Did it happen this year? last year? less than 10 years ago? less than 100 years ago? less than 1000 yers ago? less than 10000 years ago? Did it take less than 1 second to happen? less than 1 minute? less than 1 hour? less than 1 day? less than 1 week? less than 1 month? less than 1 year? less than 1 decade? less than 1 century? Was it caused by humans? Is it a natural phenomenon? Is the thing that couldn't happen today referred to as MP? Is MP a common abbreviation? an abbreviation known to a certain community? an abbreviation you made up? Did other MPs happen? which were not useful? |

So it happened once on the past, correct? Once in the past = Yes And it could happen once (? or more than once? Yes - more than once) in the future, true? Yes Was there a specific time in the past when it happened? Yes When it happened, was it happening for:- seconds? minutes? hours? days? weeks? months? years? centuries? i know you could answer all of these truthfully with a yes, given that any period of time could be represented as a large or small number of these units, however I hope you'll be more helpful than that... It happened once - and that was it. It cant be defined as happening over a period of time. It happened once, it was recorded as such, and history can refer to it as it happening. The "it" cant be measured in a period of time. But as I repeat below if you have to be absolutely pedantic it happened in less than a year. Was it something which could be measured in a timespan at all? No - see above. THIS IS THE IMPORTANT BIT. It could be measured in time (ie less than a year) but please reverse up the path of looking for the length of time it took to happen. So, it did happen exactly once? Yes Did it happen on land? Irrel at sea? Irrel at one of the poles? Irrel Exact country relevant? No Place relevant at all? No Did it happen this year? No last year? No less than 10 years ago? No less than 100 years ago? Yes less than 1000 yers ago? Yes less than 10000 years ago? Yes Did it take less than 1 second to happen? less than 1 minute? less than 1 hour? less than 1 day? less than 1 week? less than 1 month? less than 1 year? See above for all of these, but if you wanted to be pedantic less than a year would be closest. But to reiterate, the time it took is not relevent and not important less than 1 decade? less than 1 century? Was it caused by humans? Yes Is it a natural phenomenon? No Is the thing that couldn't happen today referred to as MP? "It" is not MP. Dont mix the cryptic clue title with the question Is MP a common abbreviation? No an abbreviation known to a certain community? Yes!!! an abbreviation you made up? {No - looks offended} Did other MPs happen? which were not useful? |

The community that uses this abbreviation: Do they work in the same field? Do they share a hobby? Sport relevant? Film/music/press relevant? Do they have a certain physical condition? Do they have a certain mental condition? Did the "it" happen in the 1st decade of the 20th century? 2nd? 3rd? 4th? 5th? 6th? 7th? 8th? 9th? 10th? Is it something that was in the news? Is it something that was recognized all over the world? |

Do we have to find out a specific kind of sport? Would this puzzle work with different kinds of sport? Sport as in physical exercise? or sport as in brain exercise (e.g. chess etc.)? Computer or console gaming relevant? Sports equipment of the time relevant? Game rules relevant? Olympic games relevant? (If yes: winter games? summer games?) Soccer worldcup relevant? Other worldcup relevant? Some wild guesswork: "Do they work in the same field?" got the answer "Yes and No". Does this mean if I take the figurative meaning of "field" it's a yes? and if I take "field" to mean "a patch of land" it's a no? ... maybe because the players of opposing teams are in different fields? Does the "P" in MP stand for "play*" (where * represents a wildcard)? |

I wish I wasn't a NASCAR fan from the USA so I might know more about F1 racing. I've bee searching the internet for an answer and I see there were rule changes in the '80s, but darn if I can find the solution to this puzzle! Google is actually very bad at bringing back the result - dont worry I had to manual search to confirm the date of when the rule was changed!!!! And I am a fan, and know what MP means - even prior to this puzzle - and could tell you what it stands for and when it was first used!! |

A quick refresher to get this started so I can tie it up. 1) The rule (which has since been changed) changed the outcome of the championship 2) MP is an abbreviation - part name, part something else - and is related to the problem 3) The sport is Formula 1 4) It happened in the 80s. 5) Personally I like the rule!!! |

Was the rule introduced part way through a season? Was the rule changed from A to B in the 80s, and is now back to A? Or changed permanently from A to B? Or further amended to something else? (you said it has since been changed, but not clear exactly how). Does the rule change affect:- The make-up of the car? (Gears? Brakes? airfoils? computer aids? tyres? Number of engines? Number of cars?) The layout of the track?(Bends? Straights?) Pitlane activity? Points penalties for some infringement? |

I seem to recall reading somewhere about the race changing from a single-lap system to a three part elimination type system. Is this the rule change in question? |

I seem to recall reading somewhere about the race changing from a single-lap system to a three part elimination type system. Is this the rule change in question? No That is how qualifiying works this year as opposed to plenty of other methods they have used over the years. The rule change effected the outcome of the championship |

Was this change mid-way through the season? No. The change happened, the event happened a couple of years later. A couple of years later the rules were changed back again. IIRC it was to make the champtionship more thrilling. |

The MP - was this announced kind of as 'a change in the rules has been made, this change is MP'? Does the change prevent something? Or allow something? |

The MP - was this announced kind of as 'a change in the rules has been made, this change is MP'? No. The MP is very cryptic. Once you find the IT that happened, and therefore who IT happened to you should be able to figure out what the MP means (remember M is a person and P isnt) Does the change prevent something? Or allow something? Yes and No. The rules were changed to allow it to happen. A few years later it happened. It didnt happen again, and a few years later they changed the rules so it couldnt happen. I doubt they will ever allow it again. |

Who it happened to? Did the change only affect one person? Or is the one person the person who won the championship? Thanks to the change in the rules? (if the change affected who won the championship, it's likely to have affected the ones who didn't win as well..?) Was anyone hurt (or killed?) as a result of the rule change? |

Moss? (I'd have thought the 80s were too late for him) No McLaren? MP=McLaren Project? Yes - Ron Dennis who bought McLaren using his Project 4 company. Their cars are coded MP4/x. Not sure where they are up to now. Williams use FW the others I am not so sure on. Now you just need to get the rule change and this puzzle is done |

To do with Ayrton Senna's win where he won the championship over Alian Prost, because he had mor 1st places, even though he had fewer points? YES ***********SPOILER********** Spot on Olly. From the mid 80s until the early 90s F1 ran a rule that meant the champtionship was won by considering your best 11 results. Typically in those days if you finished 11 Grand Prixs you were doing very well indeed. The rule didnt make too much difference, but it was talked about quite a bit in commentary. In 1988 Aryton Senna took the title because although he scored less points than teammate Alain Prost his 11 best results yielded more points. As mentioned earlier the rule was ditched in 1990. Personally I think that is a shame. The rule encouraged more agressive car designs and driving - if a car went pop, or a driver spun off it didnt necessarily end his championship hopes. Thanks to all those who took part, especially Beccaann and Plebian for getting so close, and Olly for clearing the matter up. |
