I stopped at the red light. The road ahead was clear in both lanes. There were no road works or anything obstructing two-way traffic. Why the traffic lights? |

Were they regular traffic lights or temporary ones? Were they pedestrian lights and the pedestrians had long since gone by the time your car reached the crossing? You were driving, I presume? |

Were you at a crossroads? (that would seem to be the most obvious answer) Did the traffic lights change regularly on a time cycle? Or were they triggered by some external event? |

Were they there to allow for traffic to pull out of a depot and only triggered by the depot traffic itself (which is infrequent enough not to need a regular green light for them). I've seen that for a Postal Sorting Office place. |

Are you surprised because of the red light, or the traffic light themselves? |

Were there any side roads at all? Was there a railroad crossing? Was there a bridge ahead? Was there a tunnel ahead? Were you in a city? |

And sorry Lynne, I got confused with yours and John's questions earlier Were they there to allow for traffic to pull out of a depot and only triggered by the depot traffic itself (which is infrequent enough not to need a regular green light for them). I've seen that for a Postal Sorting Office place. No to all but good thinking! |

was the traffic light located at an entry access ramp to a major highway? I have seen those before, and they supposedly work to regulate the freeway traffic, but all i've seen is that they hold up traffic trying to enter, then make the entering vehicles start from a dead stop and have to enter full-speed traffic... not a pretty picture. But i digress... |

Was there a weight restriction on the bridge so that only one lane of traffic was permitted at a time? |

Was there a weight restriction on the bridge so that only one lane of traffic was permitted at a time? Yes- exactly - well done Lynne! Puzzle Statement I stopped at the red light. The road ahead was clear in both lanes. There were no road works or anything obstructing two-way traffic. Why the traffic lights? **************************** SPOILER *************************** A sign by the traffic lights stated: "Weak bridge – single way traffic required" |

Hmm - I would still be wary of a weak bridge - I mean, how do they know that three juggernauts in a row is still safe? But two rows of cyclists would be forbidden? After all, it wouldn't have been built weak, so what weakened it? And how do they measure it's strength? You don't know what will break it until it's broken - and who wants to be in the car that breaks the bridge's back? |

Lynne - very pertinent quetions! I have been crossing this (railway) bridge for years and it never occurred to me to wonder why the lights should be present. It was only today that I actually noticed the "weak bridge" sign. If I ever happen to be in the queue with a few juggernauts, I think I shall do a u turn and watch from a distance! |

Well, perhaps it was only ever built to withstand a limited weight but now that so many people drive around in armoured tanks I mean people carriers, there's a lot more weight than when it was all Minis and bubble cars |

Hmm.. I've just googled but cannot find anything referring to the bridge in question which is located here at the southern end of Norn Hill at the junction with Gresley Road and Basing View. weak bridge However a search of the internet seems to reveal that "weak bridge" is a common term, albeit a rather disturbing oone! There are a number of references about single lane traffic on weak bridges along with traffic lights - fascinating subject :-) |

Looking at the roadsigns, I found one called "water foul". I would have thought it meant water fowl. But we don't have those signs in Sweden - so either the water is clean or the birdies have to watch out for themselves |
