(Hello all -- this is my first post here, so here goes......)

John was the foreman in a die casting shop. One day he found out that Steve, his newest worker, had been moonlighting to make extra money. He didn’t care if the men moonlighted as long as it didn’t effect their work at the shop. John decided to inspect Steve’s work and ended up casting the die himself, which instantly put him in a bad mood. His mood only improved after Steve hit him several times and a few hours later they were laughing together over a drink. Why was this?

Okay, Katy, I'll try that. While I'm getting advice here, how do you guys get part of your post to be in italics and/or bold type? I don't see that option anywhere.

ADDENDUM TO PUZZLE

I forgot to mention that John, upon close inspection of Steve's work, ended up casting more than one die, and the result was his (VERY)bad mood. In fact, it outraged him. But rest assurred, when Steve hit him a few times, he felt much better.......

Wunderland,

Steve is moonlighting in the entertainment industry.

P.S. Can anyone tell me why every time I post I have to re-enter my password, even though it looks as though it has stored it there right under my username?

Well, it just is like that on this forum. Don't worry about it.

What do you mean by "casting a die"? Do you mean literally producing game-dice?

Is Steve an actor? Works in movie industry? Theatre? Music?

John decided to "inspect Steve's work" at the casino, and ended up "casting the die", or, playing a dice game. He lost, hence his bad mood. Then he finds Steve, who is working as a blackjack dealer, and starts playing blackjack instead - and winning, which improves his mood.

EXCELLENT. EXACTLY. I actually made this one up after thinking about the lyrics to that old Styx tune "Queen of Spades." The line where they say "When your die is cast, she'll have the final laugh at you....." Turns out there is still disagreement among writers as to the origins of the phrase "the die has been cast." Some say it comes from die casting and making a mold that has already been set (too late to change it), while others say it comes from the concept of once you cast your "die" (a single cube, as opposed to two or more, which would be "dice") it is too late to then re-roll, or re-cast it.

I messed up with the first part by saying that John had to cast the die himself, subsequently realizing that craps (the main casino game that utilizes dice) has TWO dice rather than just one. Thus the rewording of John having to cast "more than one die."

GOOD JOB WUNDERLAND! Now get my "Morons, Idiots and Geniuses" one......
