Is it written by hand? Typed? Printed? Collaged from newspapers? Does it take the form of an essay? (eg. structured in paragraphs) Is it composed with images or other content? Could it be confused with a regular (though old-fashioned) "Dear Jackie, how are you..." letter? Or is it like a note left on the fridge door/counter top/whatever? If so, is it like that because of the way it is used? Or because of its content? Is the content shorter than: half a page? one page? One sheet? Two pages? Two sheets? or is it longer? (if it is exactly one of those, please mention) Does anybody read the letter before her death? How about after her death? |

If the the brothers were switched, would the reader kill his brother's wife? Where I'm trying to go is: Is there something particular in behaviour to the killer brother? Or does he kill because of the family's tradition, reputation, or similar? Is the brother's misunderstanding related only to who the letter was addressed? The assumption that it was addressed to him? Or is there some other assumption/misunderstanding relevant? Should we find out why he believed he was the recipient? |

Does the letter reveal one or more intentions of Estelle? If so, does the brother incorrectly interpret those actions? Does the brother assume that Estelle is going to do something that will endanger her? Endanger him? Did Estelle place the letter (after she wrote it) into a place that her husband typically would visit/examine? Was the brother engaging in a normal, everyday activity (brushing his teeth, doing his laundry) when he discovered the letter? Alizon: Does Estelle mention her plans whatsoever with the recipient? Noish, not plans as such Or is it relevant only that it was a LOVE letter? Yes! Do we have to specify what was in the letter that caused the brother-in-law do what he did? Yope Vlad: Does the letter reveal someone else's intentions? No He wants his brother not to get hurt by his wife leaving him? Yope Wouldn't his brother be hurt just as well by his wife dying? Does the killer realise this? I suppose so. But his motive for killing her wasn't exactly merely to ease his brother's pain. |

So sorry, I forgot to ask more questions, as I could have sworn I've already asked... Would something bad happen to him if she left his brother for him? Would something bad happen to him if she left his brother for someone else? Would something bad happen to his brother if she left his brother for him? Would something bad happen to his brother if she left his brother for someone else? (the last two, of course, meaning something besides remaining alone) |

Vlad: Would something bad happen to him if she left his brother for him? Would something bad happen to him if she left his brother for someone else? Would something bad happen to his brother if she left his brother for him? Would something bad happen to his brother if she left his brother for someone else? (the last two, of course, meaning something besides remaining alone) Hmm, I think I should clarify something here... there isn't really another big, tangible motive that he has for killing her. Suffice to say that, in a rash moment, out of anger that she should betray his brother, as well as his own guilt (since he really is in love with her), he kills her. The thing to find out now is what caused this misunderstanding! Sorry for any confusion! Mattias: Is the brother trying to avoid a possible divorce by killing her? Is the brother very religious, does he belong to a sect that forbids divorces? Is the husband, the wife or the brother very famous and he wants to avoid a scandal? See above! Ixoye: Is the brother married? No Is this relevant? No Do Estelle and her husband have children? No Is this relevant? No Are any other family members relevant? No Anyone else at all? No |

Does the husband and his brother have the same, or similarly spelled names, a name that is an anagram of the other's? Did she make a typo when writing her husbands name? Is her handwriting really bad, so you can easily mistake what is written for something else? Does she have dyslexia? Is it written in Braille? Does the brother have the same name as their dog, or someone else such as a relative? |

"There's a particular reason why he thought the letter was for him"... because of where Estelle placed it after she wrote it? because of something Estelle had said to the brother at some point in the past? because of the particular wording of the letter? Had Estelle put the letter under a pillow? somewhere else on/in a bed? in a drawer? somewhere else in a bedroom? inside a vehicle? inside a book? on a shelf somewhere? Is the exact location of the letter relevant, or just important that the brother found it before the husband did? because she referred to the intended recipient by pronouns (you, him, etc) and not by his actual name? |

You said it is not relevant where the brother found the letter? But is it relevant why she put the letter somewhere? If I would write a letter to my husband I would take care that he finds it! Or is it a little game between them that they hide letters for each other so the other one could have a nice surprise? The situation she describes: Is it an everyday-situation like damia described? Or is it something special and it is a big coincidence that the brother could mistake it? |

Damia: does she do something like describe a fantasy, like saying when I saw you standing in the kitchen earlier I suddenly started thinking blah blah blah? Nope, but she could have.and the brother remembered having a conversation in the kitchen with her that day? No or whatever other room it may have been Lizzy: You said it is not relevant where the brother found the letter? Correct But is it relevant why she put the letter somewhere? It just wasn't meant for him to see If I would write a letter to my husband I would take care that he finds it! Well Estelle's is the kind of little private love letter that is written more for the writer's own indulgence than for the person addressed! Or is it a little game between them that they hide letters for each other so the other one could have a nice surprise? No The situation she describes: Is it an everyday-situation like damia described? Yopeish..a more general situation, not quite like the situation Damia described Or is it something special and it is a big coincidence that the brother could mistake it? No |

Does Estelle actually write 'you'? Like "every day I see you eating your cornflakes..." or does she write 'he' like "when he wears his blue shirt I could..."? Relevant? Is the content of the letter a delicate one? Or more romantic? Relevant? Is the concrete situation she is writing about relevant? When you say 'general' situation, do you mean something like living together? Does the letter describe fantasies of her? Or reality? Relevant? |

So Estelle could have even written this "letter" in a diary, or journal, or simply somewhere in which she freely express her thoughts and feelings for the sake of writing them down? Did she plan to eventually show her writings to anyone? Did she expect her husband to read that and other writings of hers? I'm just thiking...if Estelle was writing this 'letter' more for herself than for her husband, the brother may have stumbled onto other similar writings when he found this one...is this the case? |

Damia: ok is the situation more like to do with living together? Yes maybe something about liking spending time alone with him? Yesish and the brother was often alone in the house with her? Not really Lizzy: Does Estelle actually write 'you'? Yes Like "every day I see you eating your cornflakes..." or does she write 'he' like "when he wears his blue shirt I could..."? She says "you" Relevant? Yesish Is the content of the letter a delicate one? Delicate in what sense? Or more romantic? Relevant? Is the concrete situation she is writing about relevant? Yes, but it's not the biggest factor When you say 'general' situation, do you mean something like living together? Yesish Does the letter describe fantasies of her? Yesish Or reality? Relevant? Yesish, but not extremely. Ixoye: So Estelle could have even written this "letter" in a diary, or journal, or simply somewhere in which she freely express her thoughts and feelings for the sake of writing them down? With delicate I mean sexuality. Is she writing about erotic fantasies? Is it the hole content of the letter or a special part that makes the brother think she means him. I assume that with a little thinking he could see that she lives with her husband AND his brother. |

Is she writing with ambiguity about her husband or their relationship? Is it something that is unknown to the brother, but at the same time obvious if it would be about him? For instance: "We see each other every day and we have always been friends. I want it to be passionate..."-ish? "Your physical disability..." and the brother is in a wheelchair-ish? |

I think we can have a spoiler now! ************************SPOILER********************** Estelle leads a happy, peaceful life alone with her husband, until his brother runs into financial difficulties and comes to live with them. One day, Estelle writes a private, diaryesque and passionate letter to her husband. Afraid of the embarrassment she would feel if he read it, she wrote it in French, which her husband didn't understand. Unfortunately, the brother did, and thus assumed that this letter was meant for him, written in French on purpose so that his own innocent brother would be unaware of his wife's wicked desires. Overcome by rage towards Estelle for betraying his brother, and with guilt for his own forbidden lust, he seals her fate--to be the heroine of a lateral puzzle. The end! |
