Inspired by one of Nimue's, but this is a completely different puzzle, don't worry! Nick announced, very happily, that he was a plagiarist. Why? |

Did the teacher reject a essay on something as an inaccurate analysis (e.g. an essay about a poem), even though the essay was written by the original creator? (e.g. the poet) <anecdote>I used to be a drama-student, and turned up at college one day and was asked to read my prepared poem. I'd missed the assignment, so I just read a poem I'd written a few years before... the teacher told me that I'd failed to understand what the poet was trying to say..</anecdote> |

Reminds me of an incident that happened a few years ago-- my teacher said that she liked the way I used my story to flesh out the tendency of all humans to deceive themselves, or something along those lines, and I was thinking, "...I did??" |

***********************SPOILER******************* Nick and his teacher (let's call him Prof Smith) didn't get along. Prof Smith hated Nick's writing style, found it pretentious, and never missed an opportunity to insult Nick's poems. Nick, however, was convinced that Prof Smith was incompetent, and was unable to appreciate the genius behind his poetry. One day, Nick decided to dig up a very obscure poem which ressembled his own style, written by a famous poet, and submitted it as an assignment. Prof Smith played right into Nick's hands; when returning the assignments, he once again dismissed Nick's poem as utter rubbish, even mocking some of the grandiose-sounding phrases in it. Nick, delighted, proceeded to announce that the poem was written, not by him, but by famous poet so-and-so, much to Prof Smith's horror and embarrassment. Thanks for playing, my fellow lateral puzzlers! |

Prof. Smith's embarrassment proves his incompetence. A competent professor (or a competent judge of anything) recognizes that bigshots may do crappy work. As a competent philosophy professor (I hope. . .), I am happy to tell you that the much-trumpeted philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein is a ludicrously overrated windbag. |
