Is it something one would wear: on one's head? in one's hair? around the neck? across the shoulders? on the chest and torso? on the hips? legs? (thighs? calves?) ankles? feet? arms? wrist? hands? fingers? ears? Is the "warning" said in jest? Is there something about Minnesota that makes wearing this article of clothing dangerous? Something political? economic? social? Do men in Minnesota like to pounce on women wearing this piece of clothing? Is this article of clothing similar to a uniform that the police/street cleaners/postmen etc in Minnesota wear? Will people who wear this in Minnesota get mistaken for someone? |

It has indeed caused me a great deal of heartache and suffering. However, I shall forgive you wholeheartedly and will now demonstrate my magnanimity by asking more questions. This yesish something they will do to anyone wearing this in Minn: would the person be injured? slightly injured? Will they throw something? Cause something to happen to her? Will they have physical contact with her at all? Do they do this out of anger? just as a joke? out of affection? This piece of clothing is something for women to wear, correct? Is this relevant? Would the clothes be considerd politically incorrect? What is likely that most people would do if you had this on walking down the street? Laugh? Yell at you? Call the cops? Give you money? Applaud? Take a picture of you? Look the other way? Be happy? Chase you down the street? Point in your direction? Wolf whistle? Do nothing? Is it possible that a randomly chosen group of people would react in two opposite ways? |

Phoenix has already taken the path I was going to take with this, so it will be interesting to see what response the questions receive. Would a person who was wearing this *mystery clothing item* in Minnesota be unintentionally offending residents of that state? Would they be appearing to rebel against some kind of law or ethical standards (chuckle) that are relevant in that state? Would they appear to be mocking any political leaders in the state, or the entire political systems of the state? Would they be violating some kind of outdated unenforced law of the state (like "back in 1846 it was illegal to wear fox hide scarves in Minnesota")? |

Was Minnesota having some sort of by-election when the advert appeared? Was it a topical advert? Would a resident of Minnesota immediately get the joke? Would a resident of, say, Texas be less likely to get the joke? I'm from the UK: would I get the joke immediately? Or would I need some very specific piece of information about the politics of Minnesota? Is the giant shopping mall in Minneapolis relevant? Are the names of towns relevant (eg St Paul)? Is Bob Dylan relevant? (I'm sure he isn't, but it's been a while since I sneaked him into a puzzle. He was born there and has been known to be a bit political in his time.) |

so - there is a statement, next to an item of clothing modelled in a catalogue which says 'don't wear this in minnesota'? and we know that a particular law in minnesota is relevant? and also the political climate? and also social/cultural issues? and the statment is somewhat in jest? indicating that you would be embarrassed if you wore this in M? or you would seem to be breaking a law? or a social custom? or you would stand out as odd in some way? or people might react to you or your clothes in a way you wouldn't like? does it imply that people would steal your clothes? use them for something? and there aren't any relevant patterns, writing or logos on the item? is it the name of the item that is relevant? or the name of the material? or the kind of material? is it made of hemp? is marijuana relevant? |

Any article of clothing with this phrase on it is making fun of the... law that was hinted at earlier? The political position held by the Minnesota government? A law that was enacted in other states? a political position that's also held in other states? Does the law pertain to... Social issues? Financial issues? Education? Taxes? Military? Environment? Energy? Other? Something that isn't serious? A blue law (one that's not enforced anymore)? Does that blue law involve any of the following: The land of 10,000 lakes declares mosquitos a public nuisance. It is illegal to stand around any building without a good reason to be there. A person may not cross state lines with a duck atop his head. It is illegal to sleep naked. All men driving motorcycles must wear shirts. Citizens may not enter Wisconsin with a chicken on their head. Oral sex is prohibited. All bathtubs must have feet. Airplanes may not be landed in city parks. Residents of even numbered addresses may not water their plants on odd-numbered days excluding the thirty first day where it applies. It shall be the duty of any policeman or any other officer to enforce the provisions of this Section, and if any cat is found running at large, or which is found in any street, alley or public place, it shall be the duty of any policeman or other officer of the city to kill such cat. Red cars may not drive down Lake Street. Driving a truck with dirty tires is considered a public nuisance. Placing tacks on a sidewalk is considered a public nuisance. Any person who persuades another to enter a massage therapist business after 11:00 PM is guilty of a misdemeanor. Hamburgers may not be eaten on Sundays. Any woman dressing up like and impersonating Santa Clause will be sentenced to 30 days in prison. |

This puzzle may set a record for lasting the longest! Is the catalog using a sort of "reverse psychology", or daring the viewer to buy the clothes in some way? And although they "warn" the reader not to wear the clothes in Minnesota, it's meant as a humorous warning? Even though it may be unrealistic, is the point of the humor that someone in Minnesota would possibly object to how the clothing looks? its color? its fashion sense? certain patterns or textures of the clothing? Is Minnesota targeted due to its climate? geography/layout? size? population density? social norms? religious beliefs? As an average US citizen, I know very little specific info about Minnesota except they recently had a very liberal governor who is a former professional wrestler, they have a lot of lakes and cold winters...if this is all I know about the state, would the catalog's attempt at humor be lost on me? |

Is the catalogue suggesting somehow "don' wear this in Minnesota...it looks too good!" see previous answer ****** SPOILER ******** The J. Peterman Catalogue, notorious for its pretentious, pseudo-literary writing, once gave its descriprion of a pictured velvet jacket the headline, "Don't wear this in Minnesota." The text explained, in JP's usual embarrassingly pretentious way, that some Minnesota cities have enacted an anti-staring ordinance; so wearing this jacket might cause someone to break the law.
