is he alone at home?
is he married? single? divorced?
does he have children?
pets?

do we need to focus on the fact that he is sleeping (as opposed to being awake) or that he sometimes does not sleep at home?

does he sleep anywhere else other than at home? jail? office?

does he have insomnia?
does he cry to try to get himself to sleep?

does his sadness stem from a problem? at work? with family? wife? children? someone else?

does he sleep anywhere else other than at home? jail? office? irrelevant

does he have insomnia? no
does he cry to try to get himself to sleep? no

does his sadness stem from a problem? yes at work? with family? wife? children? someone else? none of these

Does he own his house? Did he ever?
Does he sleep on a bed? Would you find in his bedroom what you'd expect to find in a "normal" bedroom"? (ie, wardrobe, dresser, bed, bedside table, lamp etc.)
If we went into his bedroom, would we notice anything unusual about it? Would we know why he was upset?
Is it relevant who he gave his stuff to? family member? creditor? lawyer?
Is it relevant how long ago what happened happened? last week? last year? 10 years ago? When he was a child?

so, trying to make sense--

so he lost money, goods, and was forced to give something to someone and this was a one time event. His finanical situation has changed and now something is in his bedroom that makes him cry every night. We learn that this something is money...and it is a stack of money that is around ten feet tall? Is this correct?

did he get this money by doing something? did he commit a crime to get the money? murder? stealing? was it ransom money?

does he want to keep the money? does he want to give it away? is it his to keep?

does he keep it for himself? for another person? is it a reminder of something he did?

He can't use the money because...

...he can't physically move it? it would be difficult/dangerous to physically move it?
...it doesn't belong to him?
...it would be illegal to use it?
...it's the wrong currency?

I know that sometimes people put up the first bill (usually dollar bill) that they received at their very first job/business venture etc. for sentimental reasons. The bill is usually framed (or pasted onto a mat which is framed). Is it something along these lines?

Had he made something out of the money to wear, like a hat or tuxedo made of $100 bills, to be worn at a special event, like the horse racing or an elaborate awards ceremony?
if so:
His financial situation has now changed and all he has left is the item of clothing, which is not worth anything but cost him thousands of dollars?

******************************SPOILER*******************************

This puzzle was inspired by one scene in a movie called Millions: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0366777/

Edward, after rapidly acquiring an enormous sum of money, decides in his jubilance to wallpaper his bedroom with some of the larger bills (probably not a good idea... but he was probably either drunk with joy or with recently-purchased expensive wine).

His fortune, however, is quickly lost... through gambling, or bad investments, or maybe the law finally caught up to him... and he's left practically penniless. Just about the only thing he has left to his name is his house... and all the money that he glued on the wall of his bedroom... if only he could manage to get it off the wall intact.

He therefore cries himself to sleep every night... for the fortune that he lost, and for his stupidity in plastering his wall with the precious bills in the first place.

Thanks to everyone, especially Booklover and Sixtyeight, who stuck with the puzzle (and my sporadic posting) for so long!
