Jim often goes to the store, buys a product that he doesn't want, and when he gets home, puts the product in his attic and never touches it again. Why does he do this?

This would be common in a collector of memorabilia.. leave it in the package and check the value 20 years later... does Jim resemble this?

are the products of a common category?
does he go to the store with intent to purchase an undesirable?
is the attic relevant? would basement work?
by "doesn't want" do you mean.. he has absolutely no use for it whatsoever?
does he buy it for someone else?

Does he purchase additional items because
- the previous ones have ceased to function properly?
- more units are needed to perform whatever function they perform?

If he were to live forever, would there come a point where his attic would be full of these items?

If he becomes unable to access the attic (maybe he hurt his leg and couldn't climb the ladder or something), would he:
- avoid buying these items until the attic was accessible?
- continue to buy the items but put them in his basement/spare-room/garden-shed instead?

He goes through this downloading->purchasing scenario multiple times correct? Other than being software, is there a relevent connection between each peice (or a subset) of software downloaded - eg, vesions of the same programme, software for a particular task, etc.

Is time relevent - does he need to use the software immediately after finding it on the market, purchases it, but downloads it now to use?

Or does his computer have a problem with installing from Hard media, and consequently the ONLY way he can install a programme is to download it, but being a law abiding citizen with a disdain for software piracy, he purchases the relevent media to appease his conscience...

anything to do with the copy protection of pc games?
are administrative rights relevant?

So the reason he buys the copies from the shop is to stay within the law correct?

Do we now need to find out why he downloads them first?

Does his PC have a hardware issue that prevents shop bought discs being installed?

Can he install anything from a cd? from a dvd?

if Jim bought a brand new game which he had never installed before, on CDrom, would he be able to install it?

is there a relevant application which would prevent this?
is he using a virtual drive?
is he using Deamon tools? alcohol 120%? disc image emulator?
are trial versions relevant?
relevant whether Jim has had trouble with copyright law?

Siztyeight is close enough with his questions so I'll post the SPOILER.

In order to combat video game piracy, game manufacturers have begun putting new forms of copy protection, often known as "Digital Rights Management" or DRM, into their games. This practice is extremely controversial because many gamers have reported that the copy protection stops them from playing even legitimate copies of games. (For example, some copy protection systems keep track of the serial number of the computer's hardware when you install it. While this is unlikely to pose a problem for most computer users, enthusiasts who constantly replace hardware to tune up their computers for maximum performance may inadvertently fool the game into believing it has been copied onto a different computer.) Ironically, this means that for gamers with computer configurations incompatible with copy protection, pirated versions of the games that have had their copy protection hacked are more attractive to own than legitimate copies. However, in order to stay within the spirit of the law,
