Was her honesty displayed because she declared all of her items? Was the $1000 she saved a fine she could have been charged for being caught with undeclared items? Was her laziness because she almost took more than she actually took? Was she planning to take something else across the border, but then decided it was too much of a hassle? |

The thing that was an "item in an unusual sense" - was it: ...a tangible object? ...something that existed inside a computer? like files on a computer? software? or "virtual items" in an online game? (Selling of virtual items in games such as World of Warcraft is getting to be a big business these days. I don't think anyone's charging customs duties on them yet, but I'm just covering all my bases.) ...a document? a ticket? a contract? a check? currency? an electronic document? ...something that existed only in her mind? an idea? something imaginary? ...a living thing? |

Was it a document that had an "idea" written on it? Like a piece of paper with the "idea" written down on it? And what was written on the paper was what was important? Would she have had to pay $1000+ of customs duties on this "document" had she declared it? Was the "document" worth more than $1000? $10,000? $100,000? $1 million? Is she carrying a piece of paper (relevant to the puzzle) at all? Would declaring the "document" prove that she owned something else, that she would have had to pay customs duties on? Would declaring the "document" cause her to have to pay more customs duties on something else? Because it would have proven something about her that would cause her to be charged more? Is any dishonest behavior by the customs officials relevant? Any dishonest behavior that would have occurred had she declared the "document"? Did they ask for a bribe? Would they have asked for a bribe? |

I have no idea on this one, so lets try these, which of these is most relevant here? Items you purchased and are carrying with you upon return to the United States? Items you received as gifts, such as wedding or birthday presents? Items you inherited? Items you bought in duty-free shops, on the ship, or on the plane? Repairs or alterations to any items you took abroad and then brought back, even if the repairs/alterations were performed free of charge? Items you brought home for someone else? Did she pay any customs duty at all? relevant? Did she actually have with her everything on which she might have had to pay customs? Did the document prove that she owned something? prove teh value of something? Was it a receipt? Had she bought the items whilst abroad? Had the person she bought the items from given her the document? had she also bought the document? |

Just confirming a few facts to get some clarity... Quote: 1. did she have to declare her goods? no and only declared some of the goods no-- she declared them all 2. Did she pay all the tariffs she was supposed to pay for the items? yope 3. ...so she declared everything honestly that she knew had to be declared? yope 4 ...Because it would have proven something about her that would cause her to be charged more? yope She didn't have to declare any goods. Yet she declared all her items, but you said yope to her honestly declaring everything she knew about. Correct? Is the yope to q.2 because she didn't actually pay anything? Or is there more to it? Is it relevant what the items are? Is there something relevant and specific about Kana we need to find out? Is there something in the document that states this information? If she had shown the customs official the document, she would have had to pay over a 1000$ to him? Or to someone at the airport? Or was it an indirect but consequential expense? When you say she was lazy, did she knowingly shirk the task of declaring the paper? Or is laziness closer to "ignorant and lax in obtaining information"? Is it relevant that airports have a green channel for passengers who don't have any items to declare? |

She didn't have to declare any goods.No. She did have to declare & she did declare everything Yet she declared all her items, but you said yope to her honestly declaring everything she knew about. She was completely honest& declared everything she knew but she omitted some informastion she knew would be relevant. I'm not contradicting myself. So think about how these 2 sdtatements would be true. Correct? see previous answer Is the yope to q.2 because she didn't actually pay anything? yes Or is there more to it? Is it relevant what the items are? No, but it's relevant that there were LOADS of them Is there something relevant and specific about Kana we need to find out? no Is there something in the document that states this information? If she had shown the customs official the document, she would have had to pay over a 1000$ to him? possibly Or to someone at the airport? no one else Or was it an indirect but consequential expense? no When you say she was lazy, did she knowingly shirk the task of declaring the paper? no Or is laziness closer to "ignorant and lax in obtaining information"? YES!!!!!!!!! Is it relevant that airports have a green channel for passengers who don't have any items to declare? No. She's honest so she didn't use that chanel |

Was the item only taxable if it was of a certain quantity or more? OR is there some condition on it? which would have been fulfilled if the document was shown? Is the money she would have had to pay in the form of customs duty? a penalty? some other surcharge? Was she carrying these things on her person? Were they germs inside her? So she would have had to declare herself under "Quarantine Clearance"? Was the document a prescription for medication? |

Did she have an itemized list of items purchased abroad? Was this the yopeish "document" we were talking about earlier? Did she read off the list to the customs official? Did she read off all the items on the list? Did she show the customs official part of the list? The whole list? Was the list in a language the customs official could understand accurately? The yesish "was the item only taxable if it was a certain quantity or more": - Was there only one relevant item, just in a large quantity? - Was the limit on "quantity" not a number of items, but something like weight? or volume? - Was the limit on the total quantity of lots of different types of items, that had something in comon? Like there was a limit on how much fruit she could bring in, and she had some apples and some bananas? |

is contraband relevant? cuban? is the fine for declaring the wrong amount relevant? doesn't the declarations statement say that you will be taxed for any declarations exceeding the sum of $1,000.00? the declaration form wants you to itemize each purchase.. and list the price in USD.. which would take some math if you are converting currencies... is this her laziness? |

She honestly showed him the list she had made, but obviously the fact that she wasn't charged means that the list did not communicate the correct quantity to the official, right? Was she lazy in the way she wrote the list? Maybe she used a short-hand of some kind? She shortened the numbers somehow, making the official assume it was a lot less than it actually was? |

Did she write down the price of everything, but not what the item actually was? no If the list had been much shorter, would her laziness not have been relevant? yes ********SPOILER*********** This is a true story about an extravagent & lazy, but honest person, who when abroad, bought so much clothing, jewelry, horsehold ornaments, & books that her scrupulously itemized list took up 5 pages & took her all afternoon to write up. She didn't have a calculator with her & she couldn't face the prospect of adding up over 50 prices so she didn't. At customs, the following discussion ensued: Customs official: What's the total? K: I'm sorry; I didn't add it up. CO: Make an estimate. K: At least $5000. Maybe over $6000. CO: How much was the most expensive item? K: About $430 in American money.
