Something happened last night, while I was fast asleep. It didn't wake me up and by the time I did wake up the effects of the event had been reversed, yet when I woke up I not only immediately knew what had happened but I knew exactly when. What happened? | ||

I can see how your clock would tell you that it had happened... however I am more stumped as to how you knew exactly when it had happened... The time lost would be obvious...was it so long that it could only have happened just after you went to sleep...assuming you woke up just after the power came back on, the fact that the clock was stuck at the same time you went to sleep would give you the time... | ||

Your clock begin moving forward normally after being reset to 12:00 by the power cut? So you just subtract the time from 12:00 and then take that amount of time from the actual time? Tells you when the power came back on? But not when it went out? | ||

Very similar...luckily it was the weekend though, so my alarm was not switched on I can see how your clock would tell you that it had happened... however I am more stumped as to how you knew exactly when it had happened... YES, although actually it's a 24 hour clock so it resets to 00:00 (midnight) So you just subtract the time from 12:00 and then take that amount of time from the actual time? Erm yes I think so...basically I can calculate the time the clock reset from knowing the time it shows and the actual time. Which may well be what you just said but I'm not in a mathsy mood this morning :-) Tells you when the power came back on? But not when it went out? Actually it tells me when the power went out but not when it came back on. The reason for this is something to do with my clock. You're practically there now with these questions. All that renains is to discover how I knew what time the power went out. | ||

Does it have a backup power supply such as a UPS or a solar / pencil battery that would kick in when the power went off? And this would be evident somehow? | ||

Does the clock have an in built radio i.e. a radio alarm clock. Did the radio come on and the DJ indentified the correct time. | ||

Well, at least at my house, when we have a power outage the clock starts back at 12:00 then keeps going forward. Do you wear a wristwatch to sleep? | ||

SPOILER If the power supply to my digital alarm clock is cut off, it turns off. However, it can also run off batteries and if it has batteries in it then if the mains is cut off it will turn back on using that power just after going off. The cutting off of the power, however, means the time automatically resets to 00:00 and then continues on from there using the battery power. When I woke up, I automatically glanced at the clock and the display was flashing (telling me it had been reset during the night, and therefore that there had been a powercut). From knowing the actual time I could calculate the time when the clock came back on, which is effectivey the same time as the powercut happened. Therefore, I knew what had happened, and when. | ||

You're right...the battery backup isn't particularly useful, although as Peter guessed it does have a radio attached so if that is what I am using it for the backup is useful since my program will not be interrupted for long. It also means I can use it in places where there is no access to a mains socket. |
