Several people are sitting around a table with a stack of papers in the middle. All of a sudden, all but one of the people gets up and backs away in fear. |

Were they scared the papers would somehow caused them physical harm? really really bad papercuts? Anything supernatural involved? When the man who said what he said said what he said did he say it with the express intention of scaring the other people? Did he know they'd be scared? Are they right to be scared? Immediately following the jumping away from the table is it likely that... the man who is seated will explain to the others that there's nothing to be scared of and they'll rejoin him? that they'll run away screaming never to be seen again? |

The papers stacked there... were they designed for testing for/measuring if there's some dangerous agent in the area? Radioactive agent? (When I was in the military we had something akin to litmus paper that could test for various toxic items.) Did the papers have a symbol on them to aid the confusion? Anthrax involved? Did the words spoken include... atomic? biohazard? Caustic? fallout? fission? fusion? bomb? hydrogen? isotope? I brought my work home? My wife is gonna go nuclear when she sees this? Divorce papers? Warrents for your arrest? |

RECAP: Several people are sitting around a table with a stack of papers in the middle. All of a sudden, all but one of the people gets up and backs away in fear. One of them inadvertently says something that makes the others think the pieces of paper are radioactive. However, what he says does not include the words "nuclear" or "radioactive" (or any of the words listed in Dlcygnet's post) and the topic of the discussion had nothing to do with radioactivity. HINT: You are on the right track with trying to figure out what particular word was misinterpreted.

was he referring to something like the flyers were going to be destroyed? Yes that he thought people would throw them away? tear them up? Spoiler: They were discussing the flyers, and he was saying how a lot of the flyers were being destroyed (due to other people taking them down to put up their own flyers, being destroyed by rain, etc.) and said that the flyers "had a short half-life". This puzzle is based on something that almost happened at my LARP group (see my puzzle "Refused Romantic Rotation") - I almost said "half-life" in this context, but stopped myself. |
