Is it anything to do with education? with people getting married? having children? Did the Peace Corps (PC) voluteers take anything physical with them which is relevant? Does this benefit manifest itself everywhere that PC volunteers go? Only in certain countries? Would it happen within hours of the volunteers getting there? within days? weeks? months? years? would it persist after they'd left? Would it persist after the country ceased to be a developing country (if this were to happen)? |

Does it even matter what was in the "book"? Would any "book" work just as well? Was the "book" fiction? Non-fiction? Would this "book" be something you would normally find in a bookstore? Does the benefit come from... ...the natives reading the "book", and gaining knowledge which is directly useful? ...the natives reading the "book", and just becoming better educated in general? Reading replacing other recreational activities? ...the "book" becoming a prized possession? Natives having to learn to share the "book"? Competing over who gets to have the "book"? Would the benefit still occur if all the natives each had their own copy of the "book"? Is the text in the "book" fixed, like a regular book? Do the natives write in the "book", like a notebook? |
