it does sound a bit to me as well like the snowman - the animated film where the snowman comes to life and takes the boy flying - don't know if thats what Tom meant though is this a christmas one? any snowmen involved? any drinking? hat trick = 3 goals scored? or a trick played with a hat? |

~damia~ has it right... was indeed what I was thinking of... worth a try! Ok... Hat trick - magician style? actual hat involved? 3 of something? a dream - mental activity in the form of an imagined series/set of events? day dream? while asleep? Martin Luther King type ("I Have a Dream")? Bing Crosby type (I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas...)? One for the road... not a drink...someone leaving then? starting a journey? continuing a journey? or is it one eye for the road! |

ah right ok lol did the person die after doing the hattrick? FA or did one person die, then another do the hattrick? more than 1 did the hat trick did a second person have a dream? no did a third person have one for the road? no. The one for the road was had by the same people who did the hat trick. And one for the road is very much a figure of speech in this context |

Is the fact that since the X Factor TV talent show has started, the winner has always (I think) got Xmas no. 1 relevant? For the past 3 years possibly, thus the hattrick? Were the previous two connected to the "dDream" and "One for the road"? |

Ignorant though I am about such things, looking around Woubit's puzzle below led me to the unexpectedly useful knowledge that the Spice Girls had number 1s 1996-98, 1999 was Westlife 'I have a dream' and 2000 was Bob the Builder with 'Can We Fix it?' which I guess could be one for the road? though I confess I don't see why... |

In 1963, 1964 and 1965 the Beatles were number 1 at Christmas with (respectively) I Want To Hold Your Hand, Day Tripper, and I Feel Fine / We Can Work It Out. In 1966, Tom Jones was at number 1 with The Green Green Grass Of Home, a mawkish ballad about a convict on Death Row dreaming that he has returned home. The Beatles recaptured the number 1 spot in 1967 with Hello Goodbye, which I imagine might be interpreted as "one for the road". Is any of this relevant? |

Well, ~damia~ and Sunshine and others did all the work. I would like to be able to say that I just looked things up, but the trouble is that I can remember all the words to "The Green Green Grass Of Home". Happy Epiphany everyone, and nice puzzle, Peter. |

Thanks Woubit i came up with this during a nostalgic (and somewhat drunken) discussion in the Pub about how X Factor has killed the traditional chase for Christmas No. 1. Is nothing sacred anymore. Come back Sir Cliff all is forgiven. |
