One dark night, while camping on a Mexican beach, I saw a small green light floating in the air above my head. Many other campers saw it and thought it was a flying saucer, but I knew exactly what it was all along. What was it? |

A firefly? :-) Geographical location (Mexico) relevant? Relevant that it was on a beach? Was there a graveyard nearby? |

It wasn't the northern or southern lights, was it? No. Don't think they're visible that far south anyway. |

So you knew what it was all along: because you were the cause of the green light? because you had some local knowledge that the others didn't have? because you have some knowledge of natural phenomena that the others didn't happen to have? You didn't immediately tell them what it was: because you were teasing them? because you were setting some sort of quiz or test for them? because you were afraid you might be proved wrong? because you didn't think it important? because you stood to gain in some way from being the only one who knew what it was? because you weren't actually there? or because you were not physically able to tell them for some reason? |

So you knew what it was all along: because you were the cause of the green light? Yope -- my father was the cause because you had some local knowledge that the others didn't have? no because you have some knowledge of natural phenomena that the others didn't happen to have? no You didn't immediately tell them what it was: because you were teasing them? because you were setting some sort of quiz or test for them? because you were afraid you might be proved wrong? because you didn't think it important? This -- why I didn't tell them is irrelevant because you stood to gain in some way from being the only one who knew what it was? because you weren't actually there? or because you were not physically able to tell them for some reason? |

Would the thing your father did be considered normal during the day? Would it be possible to do this activity during the day? for the same purpose? neccesary (in order to fulfil that purpose)? Was the purpose of the incident entertainment? Was your father doing this for himself? for you? both? - if both: for the same reason? different reasons? Was the toy suspended off the kite/kitestring somehow? Is the identity of the toy relevent? Or just the fact it glowed? Is the kite relevent for anything other than the fact it flew? Was the kite being flown at the time? (trying not to make assumptions :P) Was the light moving? relevent? Is the beach relevent because of the presence of sand? sea? rocks? |

Answering these questions would pretty much give it away, so... Spoiler: My Dad felt like flying a kite in the high winds coming onto the beach. Unfortunately, it was dark, but he had a bright idea. He took a toy lightstick (the neon-colored safety things you can wave that glow in the dark) and tied it to the string, just under the kite. So he couldn't see the kite, but he could see where it was and control it easily. Unfortunately he neglected to tell anyone else in the campground, and a lot of gullible people jumped to conclusions. <grin> |
