They were speaking in a foreign language or nonlocal accent? Is location important? Home of the tourists important? Was it dark? Time of day or year relevant? Did you hear the snapping of cameras? Did you hear and/or understand something they said? Something they did? Were they speaking to you? Were they mistaken about something, or asking for something (directions, for example)? Were they speaking, moving about, or engaging in an activity? |

Was there a singsong going on? And they didn't know the words of a particular song e.g a national anthem? Did you actually see the tourists or just heard them? If you had seen them but not heard them would you have known that they were tourists? Is the relevant time of year Christmas? Halloween? Easter? Thanksgiving? Mardi Gras? other religous festival? Is location relevant as in the country/city this took place in or are we looking for something more specific like a pub? restuarant? street parade? |

Did you hear them wish someone A Happy New Year? Were they phoning someone? Just thinking that if they came from a country which was ahead of the time zone they were in they might have been wishing someone back home Happy New Year even though it was only say 10pm? Any of this relevant? |

Anything to do with fireworks? When I lived in Germany, New Years was like our 4th of July... but then we moved back to the States and nobody celebrated New Years that way since fireworks could only be sold a couple days before 4 July. |

Does this take place in the US? UK? Canada? Australia? elsewhere in the Americas? elsewhere in Europe? some other continent? Same questions about the home of the tourists. The thing you heard that gave them away as tourists: were they speaking to each other? to other revelers? to locals? Is it relevant how many of them there were? |

Does this have to do with some local New Year's custom where this take place? Did the tourists observe the New Year on a different day than did the locals? |

Israel? Yes This is good enough for a ****SPOILER I was in Israel, flying home to the United States, and my flight was due to leave at 1 AM. As we were going through duty-free, midnight hit, and a bunch of people screamed and blew noisemakers to celebrate the new year. However, Israel does not celebrate the Gregorian New Year (while they use the Gregorian Calendar, and know that it is a new year, they don't do anything special to celebrate it.) |
