Is this based on a misunderstanding? Was he following some instruction or advice from someone else? Do we have to find what kind of trees he was counting? |

Anything to do with eating your greens? Was he asked to "leaf the table".? Was there a meal in progress when he went outside? Had he been sent from the table? Did he leave of his own accord? Was he being punished? being taught a lesson? Did Nathan have a pre-conceived notion of how many trees there were? Do we need to establish how many? Location relevant? Urban? Rural? |

Is the misunderstanding as simple as mishearing a word or phrase, or is it more conceptual? |

Does the word/phrase he heard involve the word "tree"? Is it even relevant that he was counting trees, or could it be something else? Did he want to know how many there were? If so, did he think that knowing would lead to food in some way? Did he think he was just meant to count them for a certain length of time? Until he got to a certain amount? |

Was he counting the trees till he reached a number which was a square root? Or a square? Are square roots relevant in this puzzle? Is the idiom "root and branch" relevant? |

But his parents had left the kitchen radio on, and he heard the song "Get Your Kicks on Route 66". Glad that he now knew where to find more cereal, he ran outside to count tree roots till he found his Kix. Don't you love how kids think? Anyways, thanks to everyone for sticking with it, and to Gourami and Travis for solving! Hopefully my next puzzle won't be so easy... |
