Many Americans, formerly including me, have a scrund about a particular American practice that neither they nor any of their acquaintances have participated in. What is it?? |

Is the practice: a sport? a process of government (e.g. how the president is elected)? an aspect of popular culture? Is it a practice that can be performed locally, in other words in a specific place, or does it need to occur at a national scale? |

Is this scrund more likely to be found among: children (0-12)? teens (13-19)? adults (20-39)? middle-aged (40-59)? old people (60+)? Is this scrund uniquely American (i.e., found only in America) or just primarily American (i.e., originated in America but spread elsewhere)? |

Does it involve campaigning? Town hall meetings? Direct elections? Public utilities? Tax paying? Law-making? The police? Prison? (There are so many things Americans don't understand about our government, it's hard to think of just one...XD) |

To have a scrund, someone must have a firmly held belief whose falsity is immediately obvious to those in the know but which persists in the "scrunder" because the subject is obscure in his milieu & hence doesn't come up in conversation. |

Understood--that's what I meant. Is it a misconception about the daily routine that takes place in prison? Sentencing periods? Parole? An object found in a prison? Prisons vs. jails? |

Is it a scrund that might have its misleading origins in hollywood films? books? news? documentaries? Does the misbelief indicate that prisons are harsher on prisoners than the actual truth suggests? Is it related to: - The initial act of imprisoning someone? - Initial practices of 'induction' for the prisoner (eg. collecting their belongings, in some cases cropping their hair, providing uniforms, disinfecting them, etc.)? - Practices encuntered during jailtime itself? - Or something that happens towards the time they are released? Any of the following relevant? Sexuality? Probation? Solitary Confinement? Death Row? |

Is it about walking the green mile, which is not necessarily green? |

Does it involve: The "last meal?" "Last words?" Ethnicity, faith or gender of Death Row inmates? A specific method of execution? In a particular state? For a particular crime? The law officers responsible for the execution? Doctors? Spectators? Current or past executions? Both? |

The phrase 'Dead man walking' relevant? I'm aware that some death row inmates are given a last meal before the 'D-day' and they may choose whatever they wish to eat. Relevant? Is a confusion with what the term death row technically means the scrund? I've heard that almost a quarter of inmates in the United States on death row die of natural causes! |

Actually, I thought it was even more than that! ***SPOILER************* Manmy people think that for their "last meal," prisoners get to eat whatever they want. Alas, that is not true. The prison kitchen will normally let the condemned man choose from what's available, & sometimes prisoners can have their last meal delivered from outside. But lobster, pheasant, & caviar? Forget it. Sorry it was so easy (I'm a lousy predictor of that) & please check out my new (harder??) puzzle at the bottom of the page. |
