I work as a field engineer at an oilfield services company. If we aren't on rigs or platforms, we're at the workshop toiling with heavy machinery. We have a bone to pick with the so-called office engineers, who have a sort of white-collar version of our job. In short, they decide what to do, and we actually do it.

However when it comes to us trainees, whether it's the office ones or the field ones, when our supervisors don't know what to do with us, they often tell us to "Get some blarping done."

What's blarping?

Does it have to do with the job directly? Is it specific to the oil industry? Is it something boring/tedious? Dangerous? Does it allow you to practice for the job in some way?

Is "blarping" an actual, physical action? Is it an action that they actually expect you to perform? Or is the statement intended as a joke of some sort?

Should I have pluralized the "it"s? Can blarping not be described as an "it" at all? Do you blarp when they say to?

Are we conjugating "blarping" incorrectly (i.e. we say blarping when it should be blarp)?

Is "blarping" a noun? verb? adjective? adverb? Would it make sense to use "blarp" as a verb?

Is the first "blarping" used in the same sense as the second? Is it a gerund in each case? Is the question inviting us to guess what blarping actually is?

Example where the sense changes: "Get some cooking done". "What's cooking?" Answer: a roast chicken. Anything along these lines?

Err slight blooper... when woodworm asked:

Is the first "blarping" used in the same sense as the second?

I misunderstood the question. The two occurrences of the word blarping in the puzzle statement are one and the same. But since I've inadvertently given it away, the FA was because there are in fact two separate instances of blarping in another sense - I'll leave you to figure out what this means :-)

Is there a pun involved? Does "blarp" have multiple definitions? Or can it be applied to two situations? One to do with machinery and the other with the office? One to do with white-collar and the other blue?

Oh, I bet that's it.

If not...does the 'office' meaning have to do with papers? Furniture? Computers? Organization? Meetings? Phones? Moving something?
