"svv", for "sufficiently vague values", is an acronym unknown to mathematicians, who use "slv" and "ssv" for "sufficiently large (or small) values" (as in "2 + 2 = 5 for slv of 2"). On the LTPF, svv is an alternative to "yope", so that when someone asks "Is this an X?" the answer "yes, for svv of X" is equivalent to equivocation. Peter's usage above, to describe things that are "sort of like questions", is precisely the purpose for which the acronym was invented some years ago. | ||

Did you have to name things? YES. The challenge was to list as many of a certain topic as you could. For example, all the left-handed prime ministers of a certain country since WWII? Did you look at any pictures while writing down the answers? Is popular music relevant? Anything to do with jukeboxes? no to rest. I should explain in slightly bigheaded fashion that i have a bit of a reputation amongst people who know me as a memory man. I have a strange ability to list things and quite often in chronological order. I first discovered this when to my own surprise I named every scorer in FA Cup finals in order since the year of my birth. I'm also pretty good on No. 1 singles and oscar winners. I'm sure there's a name for this type of memory ability but i've never checked it out. Anyway the crux of this puzzle involved my listing two sets of things. I wasn't 100% sucessful as you might of guessed. | ||

(I forget how the numbering system works, eg. if presidents serving non-consecutive terms are counted twice. Is this relevant?) Did you learn which state you had missed before attempting to name the presidents? And if so, is this relevant? Had you actually visited the state in question? Did you have any personal connection with the state (or its name) or the president? I won't just reel off the names of the states or the presidents. Was the president you missed from the state that you missed? YES! relevant? more than relevant it's the ........... ***************Spoiler************** I arrived in my local for an drink to find 5 of my colleagues huddled over note papers scribbling furiously. They were trying to list all 50 US states. I joined in and beat all my pals by naming 49 of them. I can normally name all 50 easily enough but had a mental block about one of them. I then challenged the guys to name as many US presidents as they could. The best they could do was about 25-30 whereas I amazed them by naming 42 out of 43. They were impressed but I was annoyed at myself for missing one state and one president. When I got home I checked the list of presidents and realised that i had missed James K. Polk the 11th president. I didn't know much about him so you will imagine my annoyance when i discovered that he was a former Governor of Tennessee. What was the state that I had failed to list? Yep you guessed it.. Won't make that mistake again. Thanks for playing this somewhat egotistical and self congatulatory puzzle | ||
