I took two tests and did very well but was still very disappointed when I made a subsequent ironic discovery. Please explain. |

Did you need to sit a third test? no.. nor did i actually need to take the first two Were you using yesterday's newspaper instead of today's? no Something similar that was too late to submit? no... some elements of FA..try and establish the nature of the "tests" Was the discovery related to how you might have done better? yes Did you really know something you thought you didn't? i knew something (more than one thing in fact) which i failed to remember hence the kick self irony Have something on your person which would have given you an answer? no |

Could the tests be described as a quiz? Were they both in the same format? Did they have a format whereby you received questions, and gave answers to them? Did you give answers verbally? In writing? Using some kind of machine? Were the questions given to you verbally? In writing? By machine? (If the two tests were not taken in the same way then please answer these questions for each of them) Did the first test contain some information that would have helped you in the second test? Or did the second test contain something which reminded you of something that you had forgotten whilst taking the first test? |

Using some kind of machine? no Were the questions given to you verbally? yesish but each test had only one s.v.v. of "question" In writing? By machine? (If the two tests were not taken in the same way then please answer these questions for each of them) no to rest and they were each asked the same way Did the first test contain some information that would have helped you in the second test? noOr did the second test contain something which reminded you of something that you had forgotten whilst taking the first test? no but it probably could have |

I thought it was Sufficiently Vague Values. It's the first time I've used this in a puzzle and probably the last because i've never fully understood it. Suffice to say that the tests were based on two things which are sort of like questions. |

"svv", for "sufficiently vague values", is an acronym unknown to mathematicians, who use "slv" and "ssv" for "sufficiently large (or small) values" (as in "2 + 2 = 5 for slv of 2"). On the LTPF, svv is an alternative to "yope", so that when someone asks "Is this an X?" the answer "yes, for svv of X" is equivalent to equivocation. Peter's usage above, to describe things that are "sort of like questions", is precisely the purpose for which the acronym was invented some years ago. |

Did you have to name things? YES. The challenge was to list as many of a certain topic as you could. For example, all the left-handed prime ministers of a certain country since WWII? Did you look at any pictures while writing down the answers? Is popular music relevant? Anything to do with jukeboxes? no to rest. I should explain in slightly bigheaded fashion that i have a bit of a reputation amongst people who know me as a memory man. I have a strange ability to list things and quite often in chronological order. I first discovered this when to my own surprise I named every scorer in FA Cup finals in order since the year of my birth. I'm also pretty good on No. 1 singles and oscar winners. I'm sure there's a name for this type of memory ability but i've never checked it out. Anyway the crux of this puzzle involved my listing two sets of things. I wasn't 100% sucessful as you might of guessed. |

Did you have to list things chronologically? Was there a fixed number of things that you could have named? Could you have been reasonably expected to get them all? Did you very nearly get them all, making it more annoying when you made the discovery? Did the ironic discovery relate to how you could have named more? Did you realise that something you had thought might be correct but hadn't said was in fact correct? Does the discovery involve a conenction beteen the two tests? |

Did you have to list things chronologically? no Was there a fixed number of things that you could have named? yes in both instances Could you have been reasonably expected to get them all? hmm again without sounding pompous i would say very few people would get one of the challenges all correct. The other one is somewhat easier Did you very nearly get them all, making it more annoying when you made the discovery? yes i missed one from each list and yes it made it much more annoying Did the ironic discovery relate to how you could have named more? no Did you realise that something you had thought might be correct but hadn't said was in fact correct? no Does the discovery involve a conenction beteen the two tests? yesish . this is the correct line of thinking |

English translation: Was there any relationship between what you missed on both lists? Was their anything specific to you that would lead someone to believe that you should have remembered that item (For example, your father is President of the United States and you forgot him in a list of P'sOTUS)? Did you think that this person/place/thing/group/idea/concept would not be on the list because he/she/it/they is relatively new in the group? Okie dokie. So you were asked to name the 50 states of the USA, and you got 49? Then you were asked to name the presidents, and you got 42? Or 41? (I forget how the numbering system works, eg. if presidents serving non-consecutive terms are counted twice. Is this relevant?) Did you learn which state you had missed before attempting to name the presidents? And if so, is this relevant? Had you actually visited the state in question? Did you have any personal connection with the state (or its name) or the president? I won't just reel off the names of the states or the presidents. Also, I'm assuming that we're talking about the 50 states of the US here? |

Was the president you missed from the state that you missed? YES! relevant? more than relevant it's the ........... ***************Spoiler************** I arrived in my local for an drink to find 5 of my colleagues huddled over note papers scribbling furiously. They were trying to list all 50 US states. I joined in and beat all my pals by naming 49 of them. I can normally name all 50 easily enough but had a mental block about one of them. I then challenged the guys to name as many US presidents as they could. The best they could do was about 25-30 whereas I amazed them by naming 42 out of 43. They were impressed but I was annoyed at myself for missing one state and one president. When I got home I checked the list of presidents and realised that i had missed James K. Polk the 11th president. I didn't know much about him so you will imagine my annoyance when i discovered that he was a former Governor of Tennessee. What was the state that I had failed to list? Yep you guessed it.. Won't make that mistake again. Thanks for playing this somewhat egotistical and self congatulatory puzzle |

I don't enjoy being serious when it's not necessary. It's hard enough being serious when it's necessary. |
