There is a certain product that no company has ever released, even though it can be easily made. A few decades ago, one man famously pretended that he was making this product available and was arrested -- but not for fraud. |

Is the product something tangible? Is it edible? Or otherwise applicable to the human body? To other living organisms? Is it an easily formed by-product obtained during the synthesis of something else? Is the product dangerous? If yes, was the man arrested to protect people from this product's release? Does the product come under the category Food, Beverages and Food Processing? Heavy industries? (cars, big machines, etc.) Light industries? Electricals? Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals? Electronics? Clothing, footwear and accessories? Intermediate industries? (eg. rolling steel for a car factory, etc.) Cosmetics? Is this product known to the general public, or is specific knowledge required? |

Would this product actually work if produced? Was his arrest directly as a result of offering the product for sale? To make and sell this product, would one violate a societal taboo? You said it was tangible, so it would be constructed of physical material? Is the material organic, or an organic byproduct? Would selling this product involve misleading people? Would an intelligent person buy this product? Would this product be considered a scam? |

No company has ever released the product. Did any company ever produce it? With the intent of releasing it? Release = make available to (parts of) the public? Has anyone else than a company ever released the product? A government or governmental organisation? A religious organisation? Some private person? Did they so legally? Intellectual property rights involved? Environmental issues? Could someone allow a company to release the product without the need of any formal law to be changed? |

Is the problem with releasing the product not so much the product itself as what has to be done to produce it? Would it usually be illegal to produce it even without the intention to release or otherwise use it? |

Snuff movie: a motion picture genre that depicts the actual death or murder of a person or people, without the aid of special effects, for the express purpose of distribution and entertainment or financial exploitation. Is this right? I didn't actually know what a snuff movie was, had to go and look it up. So the man pretended to be releasing a snuff movie, and was arrested for murder? Did he actually kill anyone? Was he releasing a film which had death scenes done by special effects, but claiming they were real deaths? |

With this recent batch of questions, I have realized that I made a fundamental error in my puzzle statement. Therefore, I must end this puzzle. Sorry! **SPOILER** I was thinking about a snuff movie, which is a movie in which the actors or actresses are murdered onscreen. The specific case I was imagining was the release of Cannibal Holocaust in Italy in 1980. The movie was advertised by its director as video footage of the murder of reporters in the Amazon jungle. He took every pain to make sure that the premise was realistic, including the use of extremely realistic special effects and forcing the actors to sign contracts stating that they would not appear in any media for two years. These condition s led to an enquiry of the police, who arrested him on suspicion of murder. He was later released. The problem is, the movie was never advertised as a snuff film, per se, and therefore, my puzzle statement could not work. |
