Not long after he got the good news, he killed himself. Ps. This is from a TV program (so if you know it no spoilers please). Because of this I will know answers to some of the questions that aren't really relevant to solving this puzzle. So bold is for relevant info and bold italic is for I know the answer but it's irrelevant. Enjoy! |

He=he=himself=HAM? Was the "good news" that he received relevant to his suicide? How long after, days? Weeks? Months? Did he think the news was good? Is there any other relevant characters? Is the method of suicide relevant? |

Is the third party his wife? lover? this one parent? children? relative? friend? acquaintance? co-worker? boss? lawyer? doctor? someone he don't know? other? I would say there are actually three characters in this story. You've got the man and his lover but there is a third, who is "someone he doesn't know" from the list above. |

Is it good news for him? Is it because he is now going to be cured or recovered from something and he was planning on getting a nice settlement from whoever injured him? |

So is the news good for both the lover and the other person? or just one of them? Does the lover and the other person know each other? Does the other person know the man in question? Did both, or both of the lover and other person want the man dead? Did any or both of them made the phone call to the man? Did any or both of them planed the phone call as a way to make the man suicide? |

So is the news good for both the lover and the other person? or just one of them? just the lover and the main man Does the lover and the other person know each other? no Does the other person know the man in question? no Did both, or both of the lover and other person want the man dead? neither These questions are based on a slight FA, though still answerable. There's a fundamental thing you need to know about the other character. Did any or both of them made the phone call to the man? FA Did any or both of them planed the phone call as a way to make the man suicide? FA |

So it's good news for him, but he believes it to be bad news? Is he mistaken then? Is there something he is unaware of? Does he misunderstand something? Is the way the man gets the good news relevant? Does he speak to someone? Does someone tell it to him in person? Does he overhear someone else's conversation? Does he see something on TV? Does he read it in a letter? or some other document? the newspaper? Does he hear it on the radio? Which of the following is relevant to why the man killed himself: Betrayal in love? Money issues? Death of someone else? Regarding this other person: human? adult? male? Is this person a celebrity? Our main man doesn't know him, correct? But does he know Main Man? Does his lover know him? Has Main Man ever seen him before? |

It's my pleasure! =) So the third character isn't human! Interesting...is it an animal? a robot? is it alive? is it a fictional character? someone from a computer game, for example? How does main man get this document-- Is it posted to him? Did he find it by accident? Does someone hand it to him directly? Is it addressed to him? Is he meant to read it? Would his lover have wanted him to read it? Is it an official document? Is it typed? written by hand? Does it consist of mainly text? pictures? figures? tables? Did he misunderstand a situation? a word? a phrase? Was there a typo in the document? |

Is it relevant what kind of animal it is? Is it someone's pet? A wild animal? Circus animal? Is this animal mentioned in the document? Yesishly addressed to him: Is his name in it? Is his name written on the envelope? Is there an envelope? Is it relevant? Is it addressed to a group of people? eg. to the tenants of 123 Puzzle Lane..? Is he the only one to read it? Has his lover already read it? Is it relevant who has composed the document? Is it his lover? Someone else he knows? Someone he doesn't know? Is it relevant that it is typed and not handwritten? Would the phrase be easily misunderstood by anyone? Is a double meaning involved? Or does something about his own situation cause him to interpret the phrase in a different way than intended? |

Yes Is it someone's pet? no A wild animal? yesish Circus animal? no Is this animal mentioned in the document? no Yesishly addressed to him: Is his name in it? yes Is his name written on the envelope? Is there an envelope? no Is it relevant? no, not really. Is it addressed to a group of people? eg. to the tenants of 123 Puzzle Lane..? The document is addressed to him personally. I yesished because the type of document doesn't have an actual address, however since it could just as easily been a letter, it's not actually relevant. Is he the only one to read it? yes Has his lover already read it? see below Is it relevant who has composed the document? Is it his lover? this Someone else he knows? Someone he doesn't know? Is it relevant that it is typed and not handwritten?Oh wait ***BLOOPER*** The document was handwritten. In fact, since it's not actually too important, I'll tell you, it was a fax. It was actually a copy of a handwritten note. But I reckon it wouldn't make a difference if it was typed. Sorry about that. Would the phrase be easily misunderstood by anyone? Anyone in this situation. Is a double meaning involved? Yope Or does something about his own situation cause him to interpret the phrase in a different way than intended? Yes, for svv of situation |

Was the document long? Or was it just a short note? Did his lover not make clear what she was referring to? eg. using 'it' to refer to something, only to have him think the 'it' referred to something else? Is the animal involved in the good news? Is it a mammal? insect? amphibian? fish? other aquatic animal? four-legged? two? six? more? would someone be likely to keep such an animal as a pet? |

Fly? Mosquito? Ant? Did this insect cause the misunderstanding? contribute to it? Was the insect on the document at any point? If so, on the original document? or the faxed version that the man receives? Is it important to find out the exact wording of the note sent by his lover? Did the good news involve money? |

Ooh! So... I guess the man mistook the cicada for a part of the text? yes! Did he think it was a letter of the alphabet? no an i? an a? a number? or some kind of punctuation? comma? fullstop? this. apostrophe? exclamation mark? decimal point? or was the cicada obscuring his vision from a section of the text? *****SPOILER***** Short version: A man gets a fax containing good news. However, a harvest fly lands on the fax in such a place that it looks like a full stop. This alters the meaning of the note to make it into such bad news that he kills himself. Long version: This is from an episode of Jonathan Creek. A man who lives in a cottage by the sea is in a relationship with a married woman. She wants a divorce so that she can be with the man she really loves, however her husband Rex is catholic and therefore is against divorce. Over a period of time, she keeps asking him for a divorce, and eventually he begins to see that it is probably the best option. The man receives a fax from his lover which is a copy of her handwritten note, containing the good news: "pressed rex for a divorce again this morning. he said no one would have to suffer much longer." However, a harvest fly lands on the document in such an unfortunate place that when the man reads the document, he reads: "pressed rex for a divorce again this morning. he said no. one would have to suffer much longer." At this news the man is so depressed that he gets drunk and takes his boat out into rocky waters where he crashes, thereby killing himself. Thanks so much to everyone who played along and to jumpingjack who cracked it! Check out my new puzzle! |
