Because Marlisa was terrible at math, she pretended she couldn't swim. How come? |

Marlisa: H/A/F? By pretending she couldn't swim, was she hoping to avoid a situation in which she would be expected to do math? Was she trying to avoid being embarrassed by her inability to do math? When she pretended she couldn't swim, was it in response to... ...being asked a math problem? a math problem related to swimming? ...being asked to swim? In a swimming pool? A lake? A beach? Was she being asked to swim just for fun? Or as part of a competition? Or to retrieve something? To rescue someone? ...being asked to join some kind of group? A swim team? A math team? Is Marlisa in school? Elementary school? Middle school? High school? College? Is this relevant? |

Can Marlisa swim? Would she have been expected to swim at some point had she said she could swim? Would she have been expected to use mathematics? Do math and swimming have something in common? Are both required for something? Is a particular branch of mathematics relevant? A particular method of swimming? Are the people to whom Marlisa is pretending relevant? How many are there -- 1, 2, 3, more? Is the time period relevant? The location? Nationality, ethnicity, or disability? |

Are college swimming requirements relevant? Does M attend a college that has a swimming requirement? Is there a particular relevant college that has a swimming requirement? Does M pretend that she chose not to attend that college because she didn't want to be subjected to the swimming requirement? When in fact, it's because she didn't want to have to fulfill the math requirement? Or she didn't get in because her grades in math were not good enough? |

Does M's college also have a math requirement? that M doesn't want to fulfill (or doesn't think she can)? Is M dropping out of college? or transferring to a different college? or pursuing a less rigorous program at her college that allows her to avoid both the swimming and the math requirements? |

Is the math requirement a test? or a class? Relevant? Did M already take the math requirement and flunk? Or does she want to avoid taking it at all? Did she already complete the swimming requirement? Is she refusing to complete it? Or is she failing it on purpose? |

Is she in the process of applying to a college or does she already attend? If so as a student? Is her intended/current vocation relevant? |

Is it to do with being asked to swim a certain number of meters but not knowing how many lengths of the pool she would have to swim in order to do so? |

What is the consequence of failing the math requirement: flunking out of school? having to repeat the class? having to repeat the year? having to take a remedial class? taking longer to graduate? having to take a class in the summer? dismissal from an honors program or scholarship? graduating without honors, or with a lower level degree? And what is the consequence of failing the swimming requirement: (same options)? |

Is she telling people she can't swim because she's too embarrassed to tell them she can't do maths? Or does she hope to gain some advantage from it? Does she hope to be asked to do swimming classes instead of maths classes? |

If she does have to repeat a year/take summer school, does she pretend that this is because she failed the swimming test, rather than admit that she flunked math? |

She flunked the math class & is embarrassed about this. So she tells people that the reason she's not graduating with her class is that she flunked the swim test. Thanks for solving it Bentarm & Ohala8 & for paving the way, Buzzard. I though this puzzle would take much longer to solve, which once again illustrates how lousy I am at evaluating puzzle difficulty. So I won't tell you that my new puzzle at the bottom of the page will be harder. I'll leave you to decide that for yourselves. |
