Were they among their own troops? Enemies? It happened in wartime, right? "They did not want to be killed"? was the risk coming from the enemy? Their own people? Can we call it "Risk 1" for clarity purposes? "exposed to great danger" - from the enemy? Their own people? Can we call it "Risk 2?" We have established that they were at risk of being shot (possibly bombed) - does this refer to Risk 1? Risk 2? | ||

This is the answer **********SPOILER******* They stuck their fingers out of the trenches, with the hopes that they would get them shot off and would have to be sent home before being killed |
