I just can't take him seriously any more! I'd like to apologise, folks. Over the last week or two I've managed to thoroughly confuse myself with my answers to this puzzle, much less those of you who are actually trying to solve it. For this reason, I have decided to start over. I humbly ask the mods to delete the previous, partly completed version of this puzzle, and I even more humbly beg puzzlers to cut me a bit of slack and start again from scratch. The solution will make the reasons for this clear. I apologize for the screwup, which was entirely mine and resulted from a failure to think ahead about how I was going to approach running this puzzle. Forgive me, and please try again! -- Jennifer |

I recently saw the concert "The Six Wifes of Henry the Eigth" by Rick Wakeman on Blu-Ray, with talk between the songs, so the family has been touched upon recently. Nothing that helps me here now, though, except maybe for one thing: Was he very young at "Puzzle Time"? relevant? Did somebody question whether he should become king? |

Is the questioning of him becoming a king relevant for the puzzle? Is he questioned for something he's done? not done? for his young age? for having an older sister/half-sister? for maybe not being Henry IIX's son? |

is the relevant vampire a historical figure? or fictional? a fictional character derived from -- or based on -- a historical character? I'm out here on an island off the wet coast of america; the succession of English royalty wasn't emphasized in school... so I'll work the vampire angle, I think. |

As I understand it, seems that something about the fictional vampire disables your ability to take one of Henry VIII's issue (the basis for the vampire's character) seriously. Is it because the vampire exists at all? is shallow? absurd? clownish? comical? stupid? inane? banal? other? (I'm assuming the fictional vampire is contemporary, FYOI) In what medium is the fictional vampire found? books? magazines? comics? TV? film? audio? Does it just seem silly to you that the royal heir (he was, wasn't he?) is now a rather goth and effeminate vampire? [just filling in blanks with those attributes, and picking a couple that seemed most ironic...] |

As I understand it, seems that something about the fictional vampire disables your ability to take one of Henry VIII's issue (the basis for the vampire's character) seriously. Is it because the vampire exists at all? Largely this. is shallow? absurd? clownish? comical? stupid? inane? banal? other? I don't think of him as any of these, I quite like him as a character. (I'm assuming the fictional vampire is contemporary, FYOI) Yep. In what medium is the fictional vampire found? books? This. magazines? comics? TV? And this. film? audio? Does it just seem silly to you that the royal heir (he was, wasn't he?) Almost - his father considered it before he died, and this is where the puzzle title comes from. is now a rather goth and effeminate vampire? Effeminate isn't quite the right word, though he is pretty much -ahem- bisexual. But you're close enough. *************** SPOILER ******************** One of my favorite fantasy authors is Tanya Huff, who is best known for her Blood supernatural mystery novels, recently adapted into the Canadian TV series Blood Ties. The books focus on private detective Vicki Nelson and her "partner" Henry Fitzroy. Fitzroy is based on Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Richmond, a bastard son of Henry VIII who died at seventeen. In the series, he became a vampire who just appeared to die. Four hundred years later, he lives in Toronto and works as a romance novelist (in the TV show, he's a graphic novelist). The series is very much dark comedy. The series has influenced my view of Fitzroy to the point that when I see his name in any context, I think "vampire" before I think "bastard son of Henry VIII." Every time I see a mention of the real Henry Fitzroy, in TV series like The Tudors or in biographies or history books, I can't help but look to see where he becomes a creature of the night... |
