did they do something generous? selfish? helpful? illegal? socially inappropriate? If it weren't Christmas, would they have done it? and would it have caused comment? Since it was Christmas, were they regarded favorably, for having done it? Did they do it because it was Christmas? Gifts relevant? Other conventional Christmas activities (caroling? cutting down a tree? making cookies? stringing popcorn? other?)? |

anything to do with NASA? Yes. did it take place aboard a spaceship? Yes. Mercury relevant? Apollo relevant? Yes. I recall one of the pre-lunar-landing missions was around Christmastime... Got it. To finish the puzzle, all you have to do now is answer the question posed in the original puzzler. other astronauts relevant? The givers may have been astronauts. test pilots relevant? Two of the astronauts involved in this incident were test pilots, and it could be said they were doing a "test run." Other than that, not really. |

is Apollo 8 relevant? did one of the astronauts smuggle brandy aboard? was the alcohol part of their astronaut rations? TANG is an excellent mixer when you're in outer space and there's no tonic, I'm told. were they permitted to consume it? bus drivers with whisky on their breath is bad enough; don't know if I want astronauts imbibing... Involved astronauts:Frank Borman? Jim Lovell? sorry, don't remember the third fellow... |

is Apollo 8 relevant? Yep. did one of the astronauts smuggle brandy aboard? Not one of the crew, but Deke Slayton, head of the astronaut office, was probably involved somehow. was the alcohol part of their astronaut rations? Yes. were they permitted to consume it? No. Involved astronauts:Frank Borman? Jim Lovell? sorry, don't remember the third fellow... The third is Bill Anders. SPOILER ***************************** The crew of Apollo 8, the first manned flight to the Moon, found three tiny bottles of champagne in their rations for December 25, 1968. Which, for obvious reasons, they did not drink. |
