"queen=FAM?" - My first thought was that you were asking if it was a drag queen. Queen = derogatory term? Depiction of a queen? Representation of a queen? Ruler of a country? Money with the picture of a queen on it? Bribery relevant? Forgery? A game? Did someone try to impress him with the queen? Did the queen try to impress him? |

My first thought was that you were asking if it was a drag queen. It isn't. Queen = derogatory term? No. Depiction of a queen? Representation of a queen? Ruler of a country? Yes. Money with the picture of a queen on it? This. Bribery relevant? No. Forgery? No. A game? No. Did someone try to impress him with the queen? Yes. Did the queen try to impress him? No. |

D'oh didn't spot the no answer to HAM... Is it a machine that accepts notes like a parking metre or a vending machine? If so do you have to insert the note with the queen's face up ? |

Is it a computer? Does someone put money into it? When they should have put in something else? Like a credit card? Or did they stuff a bank note into a CD slot or similar? Did they try to make a payment? (I've heard anectdotes about people putting credit cards inside computers to try paying for stuff online.) |

Is it a computer? It contains one. Does someone put money into it? When they should have put in something else? Not quite. OTRT -- Money did not change hands, but otherwise correct. Like a credit card? Not this. Or did they stuff a bank note into a CD slot or similar? No. Did they try to make a payment? No. (I've heard anectdotes about people putting credit cards inside computers to try paying for stuff online.) Hint in the form of an addition to the puzzle statement: He wasn't impressed by the queen, because she wasn't impressed by him. |

Does the machine incorporate a scanning mechanism or any kind? Perhaps someone tried using a barcode scanner on currency. Was the currency note the kind that cannot tear? Does not burn easily? Of certain (relevant) colour(s)? Are its dimensions relevant? |

Does the machine act as security for something? Does it scan IDs ? Is the machine's location a place of work? I have this funny notion of the queen being caught without ID and having to produce a £20 note to prove her credentials |

Would it help to find out more about the person offering money to the machine? Assume an academic. It's not the queen, is it? No. Is someone trying to scan a banknote in a subway barrier gate or similar? No. For hints' sake, this is a demonstration machine. Assume it's at a convention or a university. |

Is the scanning mechanism: optical? Magnetic? Radio frequency? Does the machine "see" the queen? Or is it a simple scanner, such as a barcode scanner, so it only sees meaningless garbage? Does it do facial recognition? Was the banknote presented just to see what would happen? As a joke? |

Was the machine for: identifying people? Recognizing people? Is it supposed to scan real faces rather than bills? Or faces from an ID or similar? Or both, and then compare? Is it supposed to make a 3D model of a face? Does it focus on a specific feature of the face? Is it relevant that he used a bill with the queen on it? Or would any bill with a face on it be equally amusing? Would a picture also work for the joke? |

Is the subject being scanned expected to react to the machine in some way? Yes. Perhaps to some cue/prompt given by the machine? Yesish. By someone/thing else? No. Aural? Visual? Textual? Any of these. Therefore the static facial expression of a photograph causes an anomalous result? Got it. ******************** SPOILER ******************** The machine is a robot designed to interact with humans. It "reads" the facial cues of the subject and reacts accordingly. Most humans who encounter the machine are friendly, but the face on a pound note is not, and does not react to the robot in any way. So the robot "tells off" the queen. |
