After many password systems have failed,
Mr Enigma was in his office trying to think up
an ultimate password system for his modern gentlemens club, after phoning his bank manager, he rang his local vet, when he replaced the reciever he knew he had the most perfect system yet........

John arrives 1st at the club entrance and is quizzed with - 41? - after a moments thought he answers
- Giraffe. He is welcomed in.

mike arrives 2nd at the club entrance and is quizzed with - 22? - after a moments thought he answers
- Buffalo. He is welcomed in.

Mary arrives 3rd at the club entrance and is quizzed with - 33? - after a a long think she answers
- Flamingo. She is also welcomed in.

David the 4th member gets into the club with his
answer of - Salamander - . What was david quizzed with?

Since this idea was thought up by a vet, is some biological fact about the animals relevant? something else other than the letters that make up the words?

Is the order of their arrival relevant? Are their names relevant? Other letters than the first one in the animal names relevant?
Is Mary a bit slow? Or is her answer just more difficult to figure out? Did David have a long thought before answering "Salamander"?

Could John also have said 'gorilla'? Could Mike have said "bull'? The first letter is relevant, correct? Are the number of letters in the word relevant too?

Is it relevant that he rang his bank manager? Is some kind of specialist knowledge required other than math?

Odd/even numbers relevant? Digit sum? Can there be more than 2 digits in the challenge? Less than 2? Is math done to the numbers to figure out the letter? Is the total value of the number relevant? The separate value of the digits? Relevant if the two digits are the same?
Is the place of the letters in the alphabet relevant? If so, is a=1, b=2 and so on?
The pattern I see:
41: 4*2-1 = 7 = G
22: 2*2-2 = 2 = B
33: 3*2 = 6 = F
OTRT?
Is the first number simply multiplied by 2, and unless it's an odd number, the second number is subtracted from the product?
If so, was David quizzed with 101?
10*2-1 = 19 = S

The reason for subtraction here being that the first digit is 1, while the whole 10 is being multiplied.

Thanks for an interesting puzzle. I've seen a similar code before, but addressing the keys on a computer keyboard.
