A woman bought a young tree and put it in her garden. The next day she took an axe to it. Why? This puzzle is from the new book, Infuriating Lateral Thinking Puzzles by Paul Sloane and Des MacHale http://www.amazon.co.uk/Infuriating-Lateral-Thinking-Puzzles-MacHale/dp/140276975X/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1268323668&sr=1-3 |

Did she plant the tree? Did it have its roots? "Took an axe to it" = chopped it down? chopped of a limb? Or all limbs? Or just showed the axe to the tree and warned that if it didn't behave, it knew what to expect? When she put the tree in her garden, did she know she would take an axe to it the next day? She=H?A?M? Relevant what kind of tree it was? Was it a christmas tree? |

I meant she=H?A?F? of course, and assume that is correct. Did she discard the stem? Did the make wreaths of the limbs? Or some other christmas decoration? |

Was her intent to destroy the tree? Was her intent to re-purpose the tree parts? Was her intent to slightly alter the tree? Perhaps to make it smaller so that it would fit into the house? |

Was there a three-week gap between buying it and putting it in the garden? Perhaps she was just chopping it up for firewood after it had served its purpose? |

Was she pruning the tree for its health? To use what she cut away? For some other purpose? |

Exactly - she bought the Christmas tree and after the season ended she put it into the garden and later chopped it up. I will have to pick a tougher one next time - you guys are too good at this! |
