Were they sunk? Did they ever leave the harbor? Intact? By "sailing", do you mean moving by sail? Moving by its own power? Simply moving while floating in water? Did something unexpected happen to the ships? To the harbor? |

Do all 600 ships sail into harbour on the same day? same week? or is the time-scale over months? years? decades? longer? Do the ships have anything in common other than their sailing into the same harbour? Are they from the same country? Is the financial reason failure to pay harbour duty? failure to pay other taxes? that the ships have been purchased by someone linked to the harbour? Are the ships on display at a museum linked to the harbour? |

Did the ships sail there in order to participate in the rush? Or was gold discovered while they lay there? So the 600 ships were simply all the ships that were at port at the time? Was it the Yukon gold rush? |

Is it just that gold mining became more lucrative than shipping and the captains of the ships abandoned them to turn their attentions to gold rush? |

* * * SPOILER * * * Galfisk and Peter, This happened during the great California Gold Rush 1849 - 1851. Gold fever ran so high that when ships docked in San Francisco harbour the crews jumped ship in order to try to make their fortunes as gold prospectors. Some 600 ships were stranded without crews. Some were used as floating hotels. |
