Were you (and others) gambling? Unintentionally? Were you trying something unusual? Did it work? Did you enjoy the results? Were you in a casino? Were all of you H/A/M? How many of you were there? Was anyone else involved?

Jenburdoo:
Were you 18/21/of age to gamble? Yes but irrel. Was a game involved? Yope That is not normally considered gambling? Yes Did you win? Yes, to the extent it was a "game". I succeeded, though. Was subterfuge involved? No Cheating? Hmm. I'll give that a yope. It will become clear when you find out in what sense this is (and isn't) a game Location relevant? Noish

Note, the "I" in this puzzle is not myself. I have answered all "you" questions in terms of the person in the puzzle

Fleemco198:
so.... gambling
as in taking a risk? No, although some degree of risk was taken--not really in the "gambling", but in the "having fun" that followed
putting something 'on the line'? No, see above
some form of chance? Yes

Vehicle: motor vehicle? This Car? And this Bicycle? Go kart? Bumper car? More than one vehicle? I don't really know what this question is asking. The "gambling" directly involved only one vehicle, but the entire scenario involved more Were you driving? Hmmm. When? On a public road? All took place here Off road? On snow? Indoors? Is the weather relevant? No

So it can be said that all this was done while riding a car down a public road? Were you going somewhere, and found a way to have fun during the trip? can it ba said that you did it: with the car? In the car? From the car? Did you fly a kite from the car?

So it can be said that all this was done while riding a car down a public road? <b>No<b> Were you going somewhere, and found a way to have fun during the trip? The fun was had during a trip, for svv of "trip", though not the gambling can it be said that you did it: with the car? Yesish, though not the wording I would use. No to rest In the car? From the car? Did you fly a kite from the car?

Two hints, as some of these are getting hard to answer:
1. Be careful to state whether "it" refers to the "gambling", or the having fun.
2. I had to answer some form of Yes to "Were you trying something that you didn't expect to work?", because technically it's true. However, many alternative phrasings--such as "Did you expect what you were doing to not work"--would have gotten a No.

Hint: The "gambling" was a very ordinary action that I'm sure many of you do multiple times a day. There was a relevant accident (not in the sense of a car collision) that made it amount to a game of chance in this case, while usually no chance is involved.

Is the "gambling" action something that one would only do whilst driving? Or is it transferable to other pursuits?

Does it involve taking some short-cut in the rules of the road? For example, is it / does it include: speeding? Not checking both ways before turning off a junction? Doing an about turn in the middle of the road (as opposed to a standard 3-point turn)?

Is a specific part Thisish, system or function in the car relevant? Is there something wrong with the car? Hmm. Yope, see below If so, does the problem introduce randomness where there isn't supposed to be any? There is a problem, for svv of "problem", relating to the car, and this does introduce randomness. It's not a technical malfunction, though. And I wouldn't say it's really the car that has the problem.

Is the "thisish" part something added to the car? Something inside the passenger compartment? Trunk? Under the hood? Under the car? On the outside? Can "I never would have thought that would work" be reformulated as "I never would have thought that would create randomness" or "act randomly"? Are you transporting something relevant? would it be helpful to make an LTPF list of car parts? Is the car stereo relevant?

Aside from myself and another person, no would it be helpful to make an LTPF list of car parts? No, if you must make a list, probably better is a list of steps taken before driving a car Is the car stereo relevant? Not in the gambling. Yes in the having fun, though sort of irr.

*****************RECAP**********************

I took a very ordinary action with a car, in preparation to drive it. The outcome of this action is usually totally expected, however this time there was chance involved, due to an accidental occurrence that has not been worked out yet. There is one (or more, depending on how you look at it) car involved in the scenario, as well as one other person. However, neither of these were directly part of the action involving chance.

Hint: Whose car was it? What did I know vs. not know about what I was doing?

OK, list of pre-driving actions coming up. Which, if any, of the following is the action (or part of it):

Walking up to the car?

Opening the car door? Directly with the key? Or remotely, with a key fob? If relevant, is the opening method for this car one that you're not used to?

Sitting down inside the car?

Putting the key into the ignition, and starting the engine?

Moving the gears to 'reverse'? Relevant if it's manual or automatic? If so, was it a different type than the one you're used to? And maybe your muscle memory moved the gear according to your system, and it only coincidentally worked for the car you were in?

Does the car belong to a friend? No Did you take it as a prank? The "fun" part was a sort of prank, though not foreseen when I tried the key To make the owner think it was stolen? No, we parked it back where it was before the owner presumably knew something was up.

Just because there is really no mystery in it, I'll tell you that the "fun" consisted in going for a short joyride, switching out the tapes in the stereo, and doing various other silly and easily reversible things to the car. What remains to be solved is how we came to try the key in this car in the first place. And remember, "we" is my dad and a work buddy of his, so don't judge me for it :-)

Were you going to go get the car for someone, and bring it to him? Yes Did the owner of the correct car tell you that you had the wrong one? Yes Was the gambling in the form of "it could be any of these cars, let's just try the key in both/all of them and see which one opens"? <b>Well, I didn't see the other car, but essentially yes.<b>

*********************SPOILER**********************

One time, my dad and his colleague were leaving work. The colleague asked my dad to get his car and drive it back to the workplace to pick him up, giving my dad the keys, the block, and the make and model.

When my dad got to that block, he saw a car of the right make and model, and tried the key, which worked. When he brought the car over to pick up the colleague, he was told that it was the wrong car. Since they had it anyway, they decided to go for a joyride and mess with a few inconsequential things in the car.

They then parked it back where it had been, found the colleague's real car, and left having had a good laugh (and having lost some faith in the security of car locks!)
