Is the game [Wikipedia's list of bat-and-ball games]? Did the ball change course unexpectedly? Or take a wrong course from the outset? Did it bounce on the pebble? Was the pebble on the ground? On one of the players? On clothing? On the bat? On some other sports equipment? |

Did "they" lose thousands of dollars because they bet on the outcome of the game? Because the ball was worth thousands of dollars? Because they lost and otherwise would have won? And it was a championship? Or ended the season? Were "they" at bat? Did the unexpected bounce cause a foul? An error? A hit? A run? A homerun? The ball to be lost? Was this a pro game? minor league? school? pick-up game? |

Okay, so the other team hit the ball, it bounced on a pebble, and so they got a run. I feel like there are several non-lateral explanations at this point... did it just bounce away from a fielder so he couldn't throw someone out? Relevant why there was a pebble on a major league field? I think they're usually pretty careful to keep them clear for exactly this reason. |

Okay, so the other team hit the ball, it bounced on a pebble, and so they got a run. Correct. I feel like there are several non-lateral explanations at this point... did it just bounce away from a fielder so he couldn't throw someone out? Yes, and it would have ended the inning. Relevant why there was a pebble on a major league field? No I think they're usually pretty careful to keep them clear for exactly this reason. You're almost there. Just explain the thousands of dollars lost, and why this one run was so significant, and you're all set. |

Okay, so was this (supposed to be) the last out of the last inning? And the score was either tied or "they" were winning? So because of this one run, the game either went into extra innings or the other team won, with the result that "they" lost the championship. Does it matter which championship? The world series? The all-star game? The pennant? And the money they lost wasn't just the standard bonus/advertising dollars that championship winning players usually receive? Did they lose thousands of dollars apiece? Or collectively? |

Okay, so was this (supposed to be) the last out of the last inning? Yes, it was extra innings And the score was either tied or "they" were winning? Tied So because of this one run, the game either went into extra innings or the other team won, This one with the result that "they" lost the championship. Correct Does it matter which championship? The world series? This one! The all-star game? The pennant? And the money they lost wasn't just the standard bonus/advertising dollars that championship winning players usually receive? It was the winner's share. Did they lose thousands of dollars apiece? Or collectively? Both I believe, in baseball terms, that's a home run, but in LTPF terms, it's a **********SPOILER********** During Game 7 of the 1924 World Series, the New York Giants and Washington Senators were tied at 3. The Senators had Muddy Ruel on second and Walter Johnson on first with one out, when Earl McNeely hit a hard ground ball towards Giants third baseman Fred Lindstrom. It would have likely resulted in an inning-ending double play, extending the game, but the ball struck a pebble and bounced over Lindstrom's head, and Ruel scored the game- and Series-winning run. Interestingly, the Senators had tied the game in the eighth when a Bucky Harris grounder also hit a pebble - possibly the same pebble - and bounced over Lindstrom's head into left field for a two-run single. Each winning player's share was approximately $2000 more than those for each losing player. So thousands of dollars were lost...all because of a single pebble. As always, nice work to everyone involved, especially Ohlala for the final swing. |
