So the speaker wants the pilot's written translation of an English text into Hebrew, correct? Does the speaker have a choice between this translation and another one? If so, is the other translation provided by the person spoken to? By someone else? Is the text related to the aviation-related problem? Is it an instruction manual? A problem report?

I think you're still confused about the fact that there are two incidents - pilots translating, and someone requesting their translation. The two are not directly related, and no one in either incident is present in the other, nor do they know each other.

Is the civilian just going to use the book for reading? This. For another purpose? Are books rare in his area? No.

Is he trying to complete a collection? Does he already have the LOTR books? And wants "The Hobbit" to complete the set, so to say?

Is he trying to complete a collection? Does he already have the LOTR books? And wants "The Hobbit" to complete the set, so to say? Irrelevant. You've figured out the circumstances already, you just need to figure out why he wants the pilots' translation and not some other translation.

He wants the pilot's translation because...he can only read Hebrew? So any other translation would be useless to him? Except maybe as a paperweight? Or improvised weapon?

Is it relevant who specifically wrote the other Hebrew translation? Or only that they weren't pilots/military?

Is the pilots' translation preferable because of the way they translated text about directions and travel? Because of the length? Because of the way they described military engagements in the book? Do the two versions differ in terms of ease of reading? Is the actual story's content different in some way between the two versions?

Is it relevant who specifically wrote the other Hebrew translation? No. Or only that they weren't pilots/military? Partly this.

Is the pilots' translation preferable because of the way they translated text about directions and travel? No. Because of the length? Possibly circling around relevance here. Because of the way they described military engagements in the book? No. Do the two versions differ in terms of ease of reading? Possibly, with assumption that the pilots' version better. Is the actual story's content different in some way between the two versions? No.

Is the pilots' translation more concise? Exact comparisons are irrelevant for purposes of this puzzle. It is generally acknowledged to be better than the other translation. Your question now is why. Is the occupation of the speaker relevant? No. Is he too a pilot?

Wait a sec...the second translation was not into Hebrew, correct? So the speaker would need the pilots' translation in order to read the book?

Wait a sec...the second translation was not into Hebrew, correct? Incorrect. So the speaker would need the pilots' translation in order to read the book? No. The speaker has a choice of two Hebrew translations. He chooses the pilots' translation, because he considers it better than the other.

Is the second translation more formal than the other? And thus harder to read? The exact differences between the translations don't matter. What matters is the circumstances under which they were written.

Were the two translations produced at the same time? Yes. During wartime? Or was one produced in peacetime? This was during a period of undeclared war, so it's hard to answer. You are on the right track, however.

Was one translation a literal dictionary-to-dictionary translation? No. The non-pilot translator was a professional translator, and presumably knew his business. Yet the pilots' translation is considered better, even though the pilots were not trained translators. Why?

Are colloquialisms relevant? Idioms? Proper names? No specific element of language is relevant. Consider the differences in the pilots' and professional translator's circumstances.

Was the pilots' translation more widespread at the time of war? More well-known than the professional one?

Hmmm....I've been travelling in a more and more complicated direction, haven't I? Yes. The reasons for the translation's superiority are pretty simple. Hint: Under the right circumstances, YOU could do a good translation (provided you knew a language other than English to translate The Hobbit into.

Was the pilots' translation more widespread at the time of war? Definitely not. More well-known than the professional one? No.

Did the pilots have all the time in the world, with nothing better to do? Yes. Which means the translation was meticulously done? And yes!

**************

SPOILER

**************

Between 1967 and 1973, there was still a state of war between the Arabs and Israel, and there were many shooting incidents. Four Israeli pilots spent four years as POWs in Egypt. To keep busy, they taught each other (and the guards) various subjects.

One item they used was a copy of The Hobbit they had obtained through the Red Cross. After informally translating it for those who couldn't speak English, they decided to do the job properly. Their translation (published after their return to Israel) is generally considered better than the professional translation released while they were in prison. The professional translator, after all, did not have three others with whom to discuss every nuance of his work, and did not spend three years perfecting the result! Israeli readers today now have a choice, and more choose the "pilots' translation." than the original.
