Fifty years ago, most middle-class American adults had an ability that now a much smaller proportion of them do. It is not an ability that technology has made obsolete. What is it??

Exercise relevant? Hobbies? Hiring specialists to do jobs one would be expected to know how to do?

Did mostly men have this ability? Women? Even split?

Music? You said "yesish" to reading...

Assuming you mean music, does it have to do with dancing?

The ability to read music (notes on a staff)? That's why I said yesish, but it's not the "lost ability" in the puzzle. I don't know whether the ability to read music is rarer than it used to be.

******** SPOILER ***************
Between about 1950 & 1965, most middle-class (or higher) American households had pianos & most middle-class Americans took piano lessons at some time in their lives. This is much rarer now, but I don't know why. Sorry this puzzle was so easy, but please go to the bottom of the page for my new one, which won't be--I hope.

Nice puzzle!

We used to have a piano in our house, but sold it a few years ago. I used to play piano, but don't anymore.

We had a piano when I was a child & my mother still has it. Like you, I used to play the piano but no longer do.
