Because Errol was growing so rapidly, his cousin sent him an odd present. How come?

relevant what age errol is? beyond just being young enough to still be growing? are we talking here about natural growth in childhood?
height relevant? weight? size of particular parts of the body?

does E outgrow something relevant? clothes relevant?

does his cousin send him something that is extendable in some way? something that 'one size fits all'?

Errol=HCM? His=Errol? Him=Errol? Cousin=HAM?
Before he grew rapidly, was Errol's height normal for his age? mess? more?
After he grew, was his height normal? less? more?
Is Errol old enough to be going to school? If so: elementary? secondary?

is the present odd in the sense that one would not normally expect it to tbe given to a child? to be given to anyone? is it something that is not of itself unusual - just unusual as a present? or is it of itself unusual?

is it an object? animate?
is it an opportunity to have an 'experience'?
is it a gift of time? money? access to something?
is it a promise to do something? say something? or not do something?

if an object - smaller than a computer mouse? smaller than a toaster? smaller than a fridge? smaller than a car?
made all or in part of metal? plastic? wood? paper? glass? ceramics? organic material?

was it something he could use? something decorative? something he could read?

was the gift designed to mitigate in some way the negative effects of growing taller? celebrate the positive effects?

was it a joke present? to make him laugh? was it meant kindly? unkindly? was the cousin showing sympathy? helpfulness? cruelty?

you missed a couple of things:
made of plastic? wood? paper? glass?

is it longer in one dimension than the other two? is it's shape the reason for the yope to computer mouse? is one dimension less than a computer mouse?

I'm not good at just trying to identify an object from questioning so hopefully one of these other questions will lead into a fruitful line of questionning...

is it a representation of an animal? or person?
is it a play on words? where the name of the object is somehow fitting for someone whose height is increasing?
would the present be as appropriate for a short teen who grows rapidly to a normal height, as to a normal teen who grows to a tall height? that is - is it the change in height that is the relevant thing? or the achieved height?
would the present be appropriate for a teen who is growing steadily but not rapidly?

is it relavtn that the person who gives the present sends it rather than hands it to him? this implies that the sender does not see Errol often - is this relevant? is the cousin reacting to a big change in Errol since he last saw him?

is there any relevant feature of the cousin? that might explain why he gives this particular present? might anyone have done so if they had thought of it? is the cousin's age relevant? might Errol's parents have given him this present?

the relevant feature about the cousin - is it something that makes him more likely than mnay others to give this present?
is it his age? his relationship to Errol? his job? his sense of humour? his physical appearance? his own height?

did the cousin grow quickly at some point? relevant? is he giving Errol something that once belonged to him (the cousin)? is it something that he might have used himself?
would he have given this to a girl?

the object - made from a man-made substance? is it made of rock of some sort? sand? water?
is the object solid? hollow? part liquid? does it have moving parts? electronics of any sort? wheels? wires? is it a container? does it contain anything? does it have a particular smell? is it any form of cosmetic? or medication? health-related at all? sports related? education related? romance related? politics related? hobby related? pet related?

so the cousin gave Errol a pair of socks? one sock?
and there is something unusual about the socks that make them an unlikely present? am I correct in assuming that a pair of socks is generally considered to be a fairly usual, if uninspiring, present?

should we be finding out what these socks look like? what colour they are? how big they are? what particular function they have? are they special socks in some way? for special situations?

do the socks signify something else? do they have relevant wording on them? a picture?
are the socks a metaphor for something else?

does the cousin actually expect Errol to wear them?

is it relevant how they are sent to Errol? how they are packaged? relevent how many socks? one pair? more pairs? odd number of socks? if more than one pair - are they different sizes? of different appearances?
are the socks new? second hand? belonged to someone particular? someone famous?
is the present a recurring one - such as 'a lifetime's supply of socks'?

HINT: Errol & his cousin are probably Americans. This HINT should be: Errol is an American but it would work better if his cousin were not, unless his cousin is joking

does the cousin say, 'you've grown three feet so here are three socks for those feet!'?
or does he say, 'here's an extra sock for the extra foot you've grown'?

relevant exactly how many odd socks? or just relevant there is one left over?

********* SPOILER ******************
Clever Hannah triumphs again!! Upon hearing that Errol had grown "a foot," his cousin sent him three socks as a Christmas present, either as a joke or because the cousin really believed that Errol had grown a third foot! The relevance of nationality is that the American Errol would have described his growth spurt in non-metric terms, which might have been misunderstood by a non-American cousin reading Errol's letter. This puzzle was harder that I expected it & I hope my next one will be, too. Please check it out you know where.
