You said law is relevant. If so: Criminal law? Civil law? Administrative law? Constitutional law? Other branch of law? Was it related to law enforcing procedures? The same would have happened with whiskey, as well as with beer? Did he discover that it made his day (or is likely to) in the store before buying the drink? After he bought it? Upon exiting the store? On the street? Did he use the drink for some other purpose (other than drinking it)? Or the container that stored the beverage (bottle, can)? |

Was he aware before going to the store that going there and purchasing an alcoholic beverage will make its day? If so, was he aware: a few minutes before? hours? days? Or did he realized that after entering the store? The connection with criminal law: did the acquisition of the drink help him in some way: to avoid something? to accomplish something? Wild guess: is he a professor in a law school and used this to demonstrate something at the school? Was he happy because some previous assumption that he made proved correct? The same would have happened even if he did't buy the beverage? Just look at the label? Talk with people in the store? Is the act of buying essential for his satisfaction? |

Just a short recap, please confirm if correct: Alex, with no previous information, enters a supermarket. He decides to buy some alcoholic drink and in the process of doing this discovers that something good will happen. This "discovery" happens before he exits the store. He couldn't enjoy it without buying the drink and also couldn't enjoy it if buying a non-alcoholic drink or something else than a drink. His enjoyment is related to criminal law, specifically to law enforcement procedures. Correct? |

Did the cashier mention the specific law involved or its connection with alcohol, or Alex inferred this connection? |

Did s/he say that buying alcohol will: affect a tax reduction or other monetary advantage? help him avoid a potential risk? Could we solve the puzzle without being aware of the particular law involved (i.e., never heard that such a law exists)? I don't remeber if this has been asked already: is the location (country, county, town) relevant? |

Did s/he say that buying alcohol will: affect a tax reduction or other monetary advantage? help him avoid a potential risk? no to both Could we solve the puzzle without being aware of the particular law involved (i.e., never heard that such a law exists)? I am 100% sure that you know the law here - don't overcomplicate things and remember to think laterally.:-) I don't remeber if this has been asked already: is the location (country, county, town) relevant? it was local to us in the UK, but this law is relevant everywhere at least in the western world |

I am not in Hungary. Where did you get that idea? :=) Let me get this straight: there's a law whose provisions can make "one's day" if one buys alcohol in a store? Every store will work? Some specific stores? That have a certain particularity? Time of day relevant for the act of buying? Day of the week? Month? Season? Did Alex know about the law (since you say it's pretty well known)? |

Let me get this straight: there's a law whose provisions can make "one's day" if one buys alcohol in a store? no, it made HIS day. It doesn't make everybody's day Every store will work? any store selling alcohol Some specific stores? That have a certain particularity? Time of day relevant for the act of buying? there are sometimes time restraints, but don't worry about that Day of the week? occasionally one day may be precluded totally Month? Season? no to these Did Alex know about the law (since you say it's pretty well known)? yes |

Is there anything more we need to find out about Alex that has not yet been revealed? Would it have made his day in another day? Something happened before that triggered his enjoyment when being informed by the cashier about the law and alcohol connection? (Although I understand he already knew about the connection)? Was he surprised about something in the law he was unaware of? |

Is there anything more we need to find out about Alex that has not yet been revealed? there is one thing to be found out, although that could actually cause confusion - but that's why this is a puzzle Would it have made his day in another day? yes Something happened before that triggered his enjoyment when being informed by the cashier about the law and alcohol connection? no, it was restricted to what the cashier said, nothing happened beforehand (Although I understand he already knew about the connection)? he knew about the law, that's all Was he surprised about something in the law he was unaware of? he was not surprised about the law itself, but the exchange referenced here caused the most surprise |

HINT Rbruma - it would make your day too, but maybe to a lesser extent than Alex here. Balin - it wouldn't make your day at all |

I don't know the legal drinking age there -- here is 18. So assuming the same is true there, I would say in his early twenties. But then again that wouldn't have been much of a compliment, so I guess he is older... I will put my age: 32 Though nobody mistaken me for under 18 since I was 20 :=) |

************* SPOILER ************ My husband was asked for ID when he bought some alcohol recently. The legal age for buying alcohol here is 18 which means they were checking that he wasn't 17. He was 17 in 1966. Yes, Nineteen Sixty Six. And yes, they were quite serious. It did make his day! |

I know that nowadays they are extra cautious and ask anyone who looks under 25, but even so.... Well done Rbruma for finally cracking it and also Balin for all your groundwork. Have a drink on me - if you're old enough in your country. |

I've got three (well, closer to two) more years before I can drink, but...does a water bottle with raspberry lemonade powder work? And yes, I can see how that would make his day! I heard one incident where they carded an 81-year-old. |
