Was Fred a writer? This, and other things. A politician? Was the text length similar to a line? A page? A book? This. The organization -- is it a political one? No. Was Fred an inhabitant of Malaysia? For a time. A native? No. Could the whole event have taken place in, say, Europe? Yes. Did he actually forget writing the text or was he lying? Neither, really, but the former is OTRT. To avoid some repercussions? No. Is this a true story? Yes. |

Even though he hadn't "written it," so to say? None of these, though you are starting to maybe circle around relevance. |

Was he asked something like "Did you write this?" and he couldn't remember? If so, is it relevant: by whom? why? how? (in writing, personally face-to-face?) If I understood correctly, it was something the size of a book, but not actually a book, right? Was it a work of fiction? Already published or just a manuscript? Was it an accountant's book? Something like a personal diary? Did it harm the organization in some way? |

So, is it correct to assume that one day he was browsing his previously published journals and stumbled upon a particular text which made him make the remark in the puzzle? Did the organization (or parts thereof) appeared in the text? Did he forget that he was writing in the journals themselves or the text was describing him writing something and he couldn't remember that he did that? Was he native of [LTPF list of continents]? |

So, is it correct to assume that one day he was browsing his previously published journals Noish. and stumbled upon a particular text which made him make the remark in the puzzle? By text, do you mean "book," or "phrase/sentence/paragraph?" Did the organization (or parts thereof) appeared in the text? No. Did he forget that he was writing in the journals themselves or the text was describing him writing something and he couldn't remember that he did that? Neither. By text I mean phrase / paragraph. Was he a native of [LTPF list of European countries]? Were the journals some sort of an autobiography or were fictional in nature? Maybe a biography of another person? Was he not remembering something or just reading aloud from a phrase in which the character says those words? Was he reading anything at all while uttering this sentence? Hearing something at the radio? Was the organization a religion-related one? Relevant what he did, besides being a writer? Another copy of the same book would elicit the same reaction. Hint: You are the first to suggest that he picks up the book -- good thinking! Was his other profession illegal in the country he was in? At the time he saw the book, no. At the time the book was published, yes. Look out for FAs. Did the original title relate to that? No. |

Is his profession related to athletics? Food? Neither. Hint: This is yet another military puzzle. Could you please recap? Sometime in the early 20th century, Fred (who I will say was an explorer) published several journals from his exploration. Sometime later, unbeknownst to him, his publishers republished his work under a different title. He did not learn of this until he picked up a copy of the retitled book. The publishers had an impeccable reason for not informing him of their decision. What was it? |

Had he explored a military zone? And not realized it? Was Fred a civilian? So if it were revealed he'd been in the military zone, he would have been arrested? Otherwise gotten in trouble? |

Was Fred exploring Malaysia? For SVV of "exploration," yes, but irrelevant. For Britain? Yes. Was Britain still exploring Malaysia at the time the book was published? Irr. Was the title changed everywhere? To be clear, two of his previous books were republished as a compilation, under a single title. Only in Britain? This, although he came across the book in India. In Malaysia? He did not have access to the book in Malaysia. |

Did they change the title because the invasion had now occurred? Their reason for changing the title is irrelevant. The question is why the author never found out, as you might expect authors to be notified of things like this. |

Is the original title relevant? No. Could you please recap? Sometime in the early 20th century, Fred, a British explorer, published several journals from his explorations (where they were is irrelevant, but he had visited Tibet and the polar regions). Sometime later, while he was serving as a soldier in Malaysia, his publishers republished his work under a different title, without informing him. They had a good, even obvious reason for not informing him. He did not learn of this until he picked up a copy of the retitled book when he returned to India. Did they try to inform him of the change, No. but failed because they couldn't reach him? Had they informed him It never occurred to them to try. (as opposed to what really happened), would they have risked something bad happening to Fred? Possible, but doubtful. To the war effort? Unlikely. To some other people? No. To themselves? No. |

Did they think he was dead by the time the title was changed? Yes! *************** Missing Spoiler *************** Freddy Spencer Chapman, an explorer and writer, joined the British Army in 1939. He ended up in Malaya during the Japanese invasion in early 1942, but escaped capture and spent the next three years living with Communist guerrillas. He was presumed dead for three years, and it was only after the war that he learned that his journals had been republished under a different title. He had to pick up a copy and open it before he recognized the book. |
