Is a monument involve? Noish Did you do something ordinary in an unusual location? No Is the specific location relevant? No, just that it was happening in a city Did you request not to be the "icon"? No Is that how "he" (can we give him a name - how about "Barney"?) was uncooperative? Is his lack of cooperation that made me do that unusual thing and thus ended up in me becoming an icon of the city. Hint: Another person -- other than Barney and the 40-100 people is relevant, though I don't know if discovering who this person is or has done will lead us to the solution quicker. Your call! |

Since we have reached post #50, let me post a short recap: I was in a city -- where I do not live -- and at some point I wanted to do something -- that being the reason for which I approached a complete stranger who -- I thought -- was in some way fit for what I wanted to do. This stranger -- known to us as Barney, was at first uncooperative and his lack of cooperation eventually led me to become 'the icon of the city' for some 40-100 people. The only other person slightly involved is Cassandra, but to let her out of this puzzle suffices to say that she is only relevant because she determined me to try to do what I did. Hope that helps |

Is it a book? An eBook? No to bothCould you please recap what we know about the object? Sure. We are talking about a handheld device that can be either electronic -- or have electronic components, for that matter -- or purely mechanical, though mine was electronic -- irrelevant anyway. It is an object that most people take while in vacation. I own about three of them and I am sure you own at least one. That object I used to accomplish a specific task that I needed Barney for. He was at first uncooperative, then he cooperated but incidentally in the process also made me 'the icon of the city' |

Is it a GPS device? Something like a TomTom/Garmin? Were you trying to navigate within the city? Outside of the city? On your way to the city? On your way from the city? Were you asking Barney for help finding a specific point in "the city"? |

But I am sure we almost touched everything except ''it'' |

Did you want Barney to take a picture of you? At a certain monument? Or other location of note? Did he take the picture? Did he keep the picture? |

So you wanted to take a picture of Barney? YesDid you take the picture? Eventually, yes Did he pose for the picture? Yesish Did he have a silly pose? Not really I think we have enough for me to declare a ***** SPOILER ***** Some years ago I made a business trip to Rome. I do not like taking pictures, but my wife (Cassandra in our puzzle), who is an avid photographer, "ordered" me to take a camera and make pictures in the city, but not to monuments or such, but to 'real people'. Having a day off, I wandered through the city hoping to find anything interesting to photograph. At last I found a beggar (our Barney) who looked interesting to me, sitting on a street in the touristic center. I asked him for permission to take a picture of him, not being used to people making photos without asking for permission. He at first refused -- so I started arguing about it. We gradually become acquainted, sitting next to one another, telling stories, drinking from his nice bottle of "Castelli" wine. After about an hour, looking around, I realised that we were photographed by a bunch of 40 to 100 tourists, freshly unloaded from two buses. They probably considered very "authentic" what we were doing there and we probably looked funny too - Barney in ragged clothes, wearing a scarf with the Italian flag, I with my business suit not properly arranged. I excused myself and left, not until having taken one photo of Barney, which he finally agreed to, probably being grateful for me spending an hour with him and telling stories. The wine was also over. Thanks to all for participating and especially Balin for sticking with it to the end. |
