What we have here is a failure to communicate.

(I expect some good-natured debates when this is done!)

Ooh, debates! Count me in.

Straight to the obvious: it doesn't involve Cool Hand Luke, does it?

Assuming no, are any people involved? Just one? More? HAM? HAF? LTPF relevant? Is this a true story? FYOI? FSEI?

Is the confusion of a nearly completed but not-quite-there puzzle relevant? Where the players almost have an answer but just haven't got it yet, thus frustrating the puzzle-setter who thinks the answer is obvious from here? (I get that a lot.}

And Jenburdoo...yes, there's an LTPF Facebook page. I found it by going through old chatroom archives, but I think you can get there through searching "lateral puzzles" on Facebook, and finding the one where Paul Sloane is Admin.

Is a cultural difference between Britain and America relevant? yope Are time zones relevant? No

Could you perchance recap?I am so glad you asked. I thought of a fun story based on one of your previous posts.
The members of the LTPF finally had convention - of sorts - so that they could meet face-to-face. All had a fine time and wanted to meet again next year.
It was a very well-planned event: The morning was spent in a large hall where Admin shared leadership principles and explained the meaning of life. (Alas, we were all heartbroken to learn that it is not "42"!) Then after a delicious lunch, Jenburdoo drew legendary military battle movements; woubit shared the details of his latest adventure; and Woodworm painstakenly described the best strategies in cricket (...even still, the Americans didn't have a clue what he was talking about!).
Later in the day, Lynne quietly pulls Kaygee aside and said, "Dear girl, please run out and get us some lovely ___1___ __2____. Hurry along and don't be slow about it."
Peter365 overhears this conversation, and being the nice guy, he adds, "Now, Kaygee, you do know that ___2___ are called ___3___ in America, right?"
"Oh yes, I've read many an English novel. I knew that one," Kaygee responds.
Balin, ever the adventurer, had been out exploring the city the day before. So knowing just where to go, he volunteered to drive.
When they returned, Kaygee proudly held out the requested item, only to have Lynne turn up her nose in disgust.
"Why on earth did you buy THAT?", she cried.
Kaygee can only stand there thinking, "Huh?"

So - what did Lynne ask for? And what did Kaygee buy?

Can I just clarify that in the story even though I explained the difference in terminology to you you still bought the wrong item? Yes

Was there something else apart from the naming difference that caused you trouble? yes

In the story did you buy the item? Yes

For the second time today I am going to ask is it a biscuit (cookie)? Yope - right track!

Tea relevant? the fact that it is used for both a meal as well as the drink?

So you were meant to buy a food item and bought a food item, just not the right one? Was there a major difference in the type of food? Like you bought a vegetable while Lynne was asking for a sweet? Or were they both in the same category food?

Tea relevant? No, not the beverage anyway. the fact that it is used for both a meal as well as the drink? Not this.

So you were meant to buy a food item and bought a food item, just not the right one? Yes, that's right. Was there a major difference in the type of food? no and yes...it would certainly cause me to go back to the store to purchase the correct item. Like you bought a vegetable while Lynne was asking for a sweet? Not this... Or were they both in the same category food? ...but this.

Recap:
Lynne asked for "_______ biscuits".
Knowing that she really wanted crackers, Kaygee came back with "_______ crackers". (Same word!) Alas, these items are not the same thing!

I marked the types of crackers(biscuits) that Lynne would have accepted - but none of these are what were actually purchased.
Nut crackers? Animal crackers? Saltine crackers? perhaps, though boring. Ritz crackers? very likely. Oyster crackers? Cheese and crackers? Peanut butter crackers? No to rest - though I can't identify what a nut cracker is - other than a ballet or funny Christmas toy.

Peter has virtually solved it, surely? 'Cheese biscuits' in the UK don't have cheese in them (you put cheese on them). Cheese crackers have cheese in them. Is that it?

Woodworm
Peter has virtually solved it, surely? 'Cheese biscuits' in the UK don't have cheese in them (you put cheese on them). Cheese crackers have cheese in them. Is that it? Yes indeed! Good Job!

Spoiler:
If an American English speaker is sent to buy "Cheese Biscuits" or "Cheese Crackers", the results would not be something suitable to hold sliced cheeses.
When Kaygee (in the story) purchased the cheese crackers, she came back with a package of tiny, orange-colored crackers - maybe even fish-shaped! Those products are generally flavored with an orange powder that some would argue is not really "cheese".

Thanks for playing. I will bring biscuits to the next convention ;-)
