Did he say something to a big bag of cocaine? Hmmm ... that would be more than a minor FA. And a bit silly. Did he say something about a woman? To more than one woman? To women in general? To a girl? Or is it that he could have said it, but didn't? Or did he sing something in a bluesy fashion? Did he sing something to his pet cat? I assume that 'she' in the title is Charlie and not the woman to whom he said things? |

Did he say something to a big bag of cocaine? No, but cocaine is relevant. Hmmm ... that would be more than a minor FA. And a bit silly. Silly indeed, but that was the point of the title. Did he say something about a woman? No To more than one woman? Yes, and... To women in general? No To a girl? No Or is it that he could have said it, but didn't? No - he did say it Or did he sing something in a bluesy fashion? No, but I wish. Did he sing something to his pet cat? No I assume that 'she' in the title is Charlie and not the woman to whom he said things? Yes, slight FA - see previous answers. And he didn't speak to cocaine...the title was just to get you on that track. |

LTPF List of Usual LTPF Questions, so far as I can make out: That's certainly a first LTPF list.... H/A/M? H/A/F? Relevant? Already been determined - "he" is HAM, and the group is HA-Mixed. LTPF lists of: Continents? Relevant? Countries? Relevant? Centuries? Relevant? Decades? Relevant? Occupations? Relevant? All of these are relevant, to which the answers are (respectively) South America, Peru, 21st, 2000s (right around the turn of the century), and "I can neither reveal his nor theirs without giving stuff away, so you'll have to figure those out." There may be more, so anyone else is free to throw stuff in. Well, you got the important ones. |

Just to verify, is he speaking Spanish? This. However.... English? Other language? Is he trying to persuade them to take part in a research project? Close...he's trying to persuade them to let him interview them. Is he lecturing them on the bad consequences of cocaine use? Oh, one more thing. Is he talking to all the people at once? This Or one at the time? |

He is a non-native Spanish speaker, correct? That is correct, and that clears up the possible FA. |

Many non-Spanish speakers learn Castilian Spanish pronunciation rather than Latin American pronunciation. My assumption was that the problem could have come from that. Did it? Or was the problem more with the speaker's native accent (resulting from his native language)? |

No...this was more embarrassing than that. Or was the problem more with the speaker's native accent (resulting from his native language)? No |

Are false cognates relevant? (false cognates = words that are spelled the same or similar in different languages but have completely different meanings) |

Is it relevant what his native language was? Did he by mistake utter a word from his own language and it was misunderstood? |

Is it relevant what his native language was? No Did he by mistake utter a word from his own language and it was misunderstood? No. The answer is much simpler than this. |

Do you need to know Spanish to know the answer of this puzzle? Past/present tense relevant? |

Do you need to know Spanish to know the answer of this puzzle? Not really - if you can figure out the general mistake, that should be enough. And a HINT: The mistake, though not the exact one he made, could happen in pretty much any language. Past/present tense relevant? No |

A simple slip of the tongue? Did he realize immediately that he made the mistake? Yes to both; I will save the specific mistake for the $poyler, but I will say that it was extremely funny and embarrassing. We know why this was the worst thing he could have said; now why was this the best thing he could have said? |

Did the slip of the tongue point out a problem no one had discovered earlier? Or maybe it made everyone laugh and feel relaxed and comfortable and he ended up getting all his interviews? |

Did the slip of the tongue point out a problem no one had discovered earlier? No, but... Or maybe it made everyone laugh and feel relaxed and comfortable and he ended up getting all his interviews? ...this is close enough. **********SPOILER********** This anecdote comes from Dominic Streatfeild's excellent book Cocaine, which is about the best assigned reading book one could ever get. To help establish background info, Streatfeild went to Peru to learn about coca from the cocaleros (coca growers) in San Jorge, but they were worried that they would be arrested (Streatfeild was with several policement, and there was a constant fear of being arrested by the DEA), so they at first refused to be interviewed. A local farmer named Moises addressed the crowd, saying that Streatfield wanted to make a speech (which he didn't). In order to calm the crowd, Streatfeild played along. What happened next...well, it's best in his own words: "For posterity, Moises recorded my little oration with a hand-held tape recorder. He needn't have bothered. In my battered Spanish I explained that I was English, that I was a journalist, that I was writing a book about coca to try to explain to the people in Britain what was going on in Peru. Then I screwed up. Racking my brain to come up with something else to say that might persuade these guys that I was a serious investigator, I tried to tell them that I was 31 years old and had been researching coca in England for two years. However, nerves, and the fact that my Spanish is rudimentary at best, led to a fatal error: in Spanish the word 'aņos' has a very different meaning from the word 'anos'. I chose the wrong one. Thus the villagers of San Jorge were delighted to hear that I had 31 anuses and had been writing a book for two of them. A snigger ran through the crowd. It was probably the best thing I could have said. Clearly I was harmless: even the DEA wouldn't employ someone this stupid." Nice job to everyone involved; a lot of you worked on this. Bonus points to Eli, who got the last bit. |
