Blue and golden, grey and red Large and small, go head-to-head Twice times two, the teams do fly Each year to meet eye to eye The King of Beasts and beast of name War with each other, glory and shame Never ceasing, rivals twain The outcome's certain, game after game. For through the years twice times two The fight is on, and when they're through King of Beasts and beast of name One wins the glory, one runs in shame. The players change 'least once a year To fight for the glory held most dear Yet outcome ne'er changes ways The King of Beasts always wins these days. Now tell me, my friends, gathered near, What do I speak of, written here? And ere this storied year is through, Shall it be as expected, or outcome new? |

Is sports relevant in any way? Especially those on New Year's Day? Or those in one year every four? Like World Cup, Olympics, or a Rugby Tour? Or do I have it the other way? And it's four times a year, roughly every 90 days? Or am I completely wrong? If so, can you sing please a song? Are the players human males? And are they adults, or garbage pails? Is the glory with some money? Or are you just trying to be funny? Are Lions in any way related? Or is it an allusion to a symbol, overrated? Is the thing you write of fun? And did you make some bad puns? |

Sports is relevant in every way But naught to do with New Year's Day The events occur every year But there are sets of four relevant here. It is not like World Cup, Olympics, or a Rugby Tour Although I expect those are good sets of four. The players are indeed human males And the events usually get quite good sales They are not adults, those that play Though coaches are, in most every way The glory does not involve money Though people may lay bets, it'd be quite funny Lions are in every way related They are also a symbol, but not overrated The thing I write of is quite fun Though really, there's two things, and I intended no puns. |

Is this a sporting rivalry, With noble lion being just The mascot of one side, you see - Is this correct? Or am I lost? |

The rivalry, is it between Two colleges that can be seen? Or pro sports, maybe high school, say, Might th'rivalry be in this way? The better side...suspicious...ah! Is it from Californ-i-a? The "worse" side then - from C-A too? Or somewhere else, I ask of you? |

The rivalry is, as you did say Found among the high school days The locale, well, you have narrowed it down, Is within a California town. ("Town" is, actually, misleading I fear, But "city" rhymed badly. Still, it is here In which city I dwell, and if I've not made a mess Of laying the clues, perhaps you can guess.) |

The city in which you do live: LA? SD? SB? SF? Or is it Sacramento, say, That I am looking for today? |

SB is Santa Barbara, I presume, and it is nowhere near; Los Angeles and San Diego are likewise not it, I fear. However, those two you named were closer in a way, Though that closeness with SF shares, it is not distance, I say. Distance, you see, would bring San Francisco closest of the four, For I dwell within the Bay Area, though I cannot see the shore. Where would LA, SD, and SF be closest, I think you might progress the most If you'd find which one you left out. As for SB, it's toast. |

San Jose is the place, indeed Now all that's left to find out, see Is: Who are these rivals of whom I speak? What is the glory that they do seek? One mascot is the proud Lion, yes, But who's t'other in this mess? For Lion always wins the day, So who's the losers that fail this way? Last, I did say there's four teams involved, I'll hint: two games. Which ones, to solve, You must find out, and when they are I'm sure you'll manage, Balin; you're a LTPF star. |

The other mascot - animal? Or something much more trivial? The sport - does it require a ball? Or other gear? Or none at all? |

The other mascot is an animal, Though not a beast; the thing's small At least compared to a Lion's strength and size Maybe that's the reason they forfeit the prize. The sport requires a ball, quite so, And other gear which you well know, For this sport is one followed quite well From shore to shore on American soil. |

The sport is baseball? Football? Or Might basketball be on the shore? Or is it soccer? LAX, perhaps? (That's all I've got - I'll take a nap.) Not really, napping's not my thing; I'd rather be awake puzzling. |

The sport is football, Balin, yes Now all that's left to address Is: Which football teams, Lion and enemy Meet in these two games? When shall they be? What is this small creature, mascot of the rival Defying strong Lion, to ensure its survival? I suppose despite constant defeat, I'll give them this: They never give up, though the glory they'll miss. |

It could eat the Mouse, of Aesop's fame Though I doubt that's its usual prey; It is a pet, and I'm sure quite warm, though this canine may cause harm, I say. |

Does the animal be a doggie? Or is it a waffle, old and soggy? Is it your high school, kaylee? It's sure not a high school belonging to me! If it is yours are you the lions? And if you're not, what you be fryin'? |

The animal does be a doggie I'd say the coach must be a waffle old and soggy My high school is the Lions' home I'm glad I never did the other one roam. I wonder why the losers' coach never got fired An eleven-year winning streak has yet to expire... |

The breed of dog's important, yes? (There are a lot, I'd have to guess.) Is this dog large? Or fierce? Or rough? Or is it tiny, barking "Ruff!" A couple guesses I will pose: Is it a poodle? I don't know. Or might it be, like Taco Bell "Chihuahua"-- not a mascot well? |

The breed of dog is important, so Let's through guesses go; The dog's not big, but fierce and rough I don't think it's tiny, but this team's not tough! Poodle's quite wrong, though we Lionesses seem To have thought it would best fit this losing team. Chihuahua is also not OTRT, But it would surely better fit their reality. |

Is it Bulldog or maybe Dachsund? And are their offensive linemen quite rotund? Ok, that last part doesn't matter I bet But I needed a rhyme and it works, don't fret Is the breed of dog a puppy? Or sheepdog, corn dog, hot dog, or Yuppie? |

Bulldog it is, you are quite right, As for their linemen, I bet they're a sight Though one I didn't see, too broke for tickets I cheered them on mentally, but always did miss it. Corn dogs and hot dogs might have been sold But mascots they weren't, I've never been told of any team called by such a name Still, it'd fit, considering the way they lose all the games. |

I suppose no more will you find out Without searching the 'Net, then I'd have no doubt You'd quickly come across these two famous games And all I wanted was for you to divulge their names. Still, you got close enough, and here then, my friends, With these few words, my puzzle here ends: The schools in question, are Lincoln High, Home of the Lions, whose wins never die And of San Jose High, Academy proud Of its Bulldogs, who lose, yet never seem cowed. These rivals two meet for two games a year; The Thanksgiving Big Bone is the one best held dear. Varsity football goes out on the field, And these eleven years past always Bulldogs did yield. Thursday ere the Big Bone, JV does show What they have learned, so Mr. Collins will know Whether in one or two years they'll be Big Bone prepared And with Lion Pride great, new cubs always dare To beat out the JV pups on the field, San Jose High's youngest Bulldogs try to Little Bone steal. The Little Bone, I believe, is always here won Big and Little Lions seem to have the most fun. Though the Bulldogs' Academy bears the name of my town, My former school is the victor, and the beasts' King wears the crown. I do hope that this year, the Lions yet rule And show San Jose High which is the best school. The Bulldogs should really send their coach to the boiler To stick him in oil; there, that is the SPOILER! |
